View Full Version : Muffling Room
I have seen on online musci stores the foam (forgot what it's called) that you place in the walls and roof, so that it muffles the sound a bit and walls dont vibrate. Some sets, in my opinion, look to be cheap in price to what it includes, but my mom thinks otherwise (that they are too expensive to be such a simple thing).
Is there any other kind of "foam" that could do (atlleast almost) do the same thing but cost cheaper? That could find on a hardware store? like lows, home depot...ect.

Foam is designed to control the reflected sound in a room or the amount the sound bounces off the walls causing echo or flutter. It will give a minor reduction in sound leaving the room but not much in order to stop sound from escaping that involves construction techniques in the building of a room. Other thing to keep in mind is playing with dynamics, no reason to really crank up the volume during practice sessions, it will actually wear you out quicker.

True. The density of foam is the most important factor in sound absorbtion, I've heard. Not thickness, but density. "Project" foam is more dense, generally, than camping pad foam. It's also more expensive.
Are you looking to isolate the sound from the rest of the house? Reduce the level? Reduce certain frequencies? There are different approaches and methods for each.

I used off-the-shelf mattress covers, see here:

$14/ea. - about as cheap as you can go...and they reduce internal noise well. Check the details of that thread for other ideas as far as sound isolation, noise reduction, etc. I built the whole room for about $1100.
