what is the best set up for a pedal to make the bass drum sound louder???

Few things would help to know. What kind of pedal, what kind of bass and what heads do you have on it? Are you looking for volume or more of a deep punch sound?

1. Tune your kick drum for a more open sound
2. Let the beater rebound off the head
3. Don't tighten the spring too much
4. Keep your foot around the middle of the pedal board
5. Use a motion that incorporates the whole leg and the ankle
6. If all else fails, get a four pound iron beater.

Felt beater is not as loud as hard plastic, ditch the felt beater if using one. A lot of big name pros actually don't have a loud bass drum, they rely on miking it up.

Use a wood or plastic beater, and put one of those balancer weights right under the beater head.

DW's plastic beater has the widest surface area. It's wider than the Pearl Quad, Slug, SpeedBall (blue), Gibraltar...

Wood beaters have a slightly...I want to say "deeper" or maybe "smoother "tone to the attack.
They are all pretty much around the same size.

Danmar has the Tommy Aldridge beater that has a slightly different shape to it.
You can probably check a pic of it out on line.

It might take your foot a little bit to get used to the different weight (or not), but it'll give the beater a little more impact power.

You can use a Kevlar patch (like a Remo Falams), or one of those Danmar "Metal" patches if you want more attack or a "clicky" sound.

A batter head that isn't pre-muffled is going to make the kick "sound louder", and if the shell doesn't have a ton of stuff in it, it will project more sound.

Let a more open drum and drum head do the work, not your foot.

If you use a head like an eMad, or an Aquarian with the big felt ring (sorry, don't know the model), you are going to have to stomp the crap out of the drum to "get it louder".

Those are nice heads for what they do, but they aren't going to get you a "louder sound".
