i guess the pro M is better than the M Birch? i'm thinking about buying one or the other. either the M Birch Crossover 6 piece ($630) or M-Birch Studio 7 piece ($650) or Pro-M Crossover 22 5 piece ($680)
what's your take on all these kits and which would you buy?
i have NO experience with mapex so ANY advice would be appreciated!

I wouldnt say BETTER. I would say different. One is Birch and the other is Maple. So I guess it depends on your cup of tea.

I'd definitely agree- different, not better. I played a birch kit for 10 years, and I was completely happy with the sound. It was bright and punchy. I bought my first maple kit, and well... I won't be going back to birch any time soon. They're warmer and have a rounder tone. I love my Pro M's.

The Pro-M drums are considered to be better than the M Birch series. A couple of differences are in the hardware. The 14" & 16" FT on the M Birch has 6 lugs where the Pro-M has 8 lugs. The Pro M snares are also built much better.
IMO, the M Birch makes a great mid-line kit. Makes for an awesome starter kit. Great for gigging and rehersals. Possibly even for recording with good heads on them. The BD and toms sound great. The Pro-Ms however are all maple, have a HUGE selection of lacquer finishes to chose from and almost considered to be low-pro level drums. The sound great and replace the stock heads and you've got killer drums. In fact, it's a little know secret that it is the SAME shell used in the Orion series....just minus one paper thin veneer layer of Burl for the exotic stains.
Both series have their own niche.
