I would scour eBay to get an idea of whats out there. Should be tons.
Well actually there were 24 sets at this point but still a good sampling.

I think there has been a real surge in the market of companies to produce decent entry level timbales in the 200-220 range. I would not by LP aspires, but they are probably the cheapest out there. Looks like the price of timbales has actually gone up due to the increased price of materials. You might be looking at 250 for a decent set. I would go craigslist then ebay...
bueno suerte!

The lower LP's such as Aspire are made by another company called Tycoon. If you wanted a set like Aspire's the Tycoon's may be slightly cheaper seeing as you're not paying for the name LP.
Which ever you decide to buy, be sure that the connecting plates that hold the drums to the stand are in good condition. You ideally want your drums level and if they are loose and flopping around it can get very annoying. You may also want to try to get a set with a cowbell rod. Buying these separately can be expensive. Especially LP's.
As was said you can probably get a good set of second hand drums on Ebay.

Tycoon! That was the company I was trying to think of. I haven't ever actually seen anything of theirs, but the name has been making its round in the mags.

First comment in a while. hahaha
I think it depends on the kind of music you are playing. I've never played the timbales before... I'd like to, I want to but anywhooo! I've seen the best mexican bands use LP 15" and 16" Tito Puente Stainless Steel Thunder Timbales. But like I said, it depends on what you want to do, it may work for them, but maybe not as well for you.
Here's a link to it:

hope it helps.
