I have never had the pleasure of trying Bubinga Drums, and I was wondering if people who had liked them or not. I've heard they have a very nice warm tone and combined with birch sound incredibly cutting, warm, deep and punchy.
Thoughts?

Bubinga wood makes for wonderful sounding drums for any type of music is my feeling. My Peace Kahuna all 9 ply construction bubinga Bee-Bopp jazz kit is pure sonic joy to hear on a concert stage or in the studio. Everything is there from warmth, depth of tone to dynamic response and clarity of note and certainly they pack quite a serious punch for small size drums. In general very "musical" sounding drums.

Just recieved the final mix for my review for any possible further mixing comments I might have regarding a recent studio recording project they were used for. Not for public release yet but all I can say is these bubinga drums really delivered the sonic goods in the studio for the music big time. Yes a big thumbs up for bubinga wood drums indeed!

Stan: Please post that music for us to hear! I would love to hear how your Peace Bubinga sounds in your jazz work!

LarryMullen3: I like the Bubingas also. I've played on some Tama Starclassic Bubingas and liked them a lot. The kit I played on was a rock config. (22" bass, 10/12 toms, 16 floor), and it sounded great: roaring, dark low tones, but also have the potential for great, clear high sounds. Basically like a nice maple punch with more power and darker overtones. I think they're great, and I know Stan swears by them for jazz work, so they are a wood that can really cover a wide variety of musical styles.

Low res sample of a complete drum feature track "Waltz for Stan" featuring the new bubinga kit on an upcoming CD can be found on MySpace Music. I have the high res finished mix of this take now for sound/mix inspection and it's much more impressive Robert:

Okay here we go, . A low res version of "Waltz for Stan" can be heard on Jared Burrows page and player. 2nd to last tune on his My Space Music page. Gives you the idea. The high res version is much more impressive of the drums in the opening solo introduction to the piece especially the amazing deep tone and note coming from the recorded 18" x16" bass drum in the studio.

Actually the last 4 tracks on the player are all new low res recordings with the Peace Kahuna kit and my Agops in the studio recorded quite recently: "Song for Al Johnston", "Filths for Burrows", "Song for Stan" and "The Grass is Always...

Stan - you really love showing those off don't you? =)
I know I would. It's a beautiful kit.

Anyway, bubinga is like maple on steriods. Great sound, good for any style of music.
I believe Tama, Ddrum, Peace, Unix, and possibly another brand are currently the only people who actually stock bubinga.

If you have the money, it is DEFINETLY a wood to check out and buy.

Thanks Tamascb. Well now not only can you "see" my Peace bubinga jazz kit but people can finally actually "hear" them too thanks to the leader on the recording session posting 4 low res full length sample tracks on his MySpace Music player on the link I provided from his current CD recording project. Love these drums and yes not many are making full on bubinga shells ply or other types of wood construction these days.

I recently just bought a Tama Warlord Masai snare which has 12 ply bubinga and all I could say both from the sound and how it looks is WOW!! They sound great both in high and low pitched tuning! I think bubinga is one of the best wood and has one of the richest sound in drum!
