i have an old 70's ludwig speedking basedrum pedal, which i use for all my gigs, everything basically as its my only pedal! i was wondering are there any modern equivalents. coz im considering getting a new one, just for some variety. and ive never really played any other pedals.
how do pedals like the iron cobras and DW's play, are they similar to speedkings?
hope u get the idea of what im trying to sayy!

Dare to say, I don't think you'll find any "other" pedal that feels like a Speed King, especially manufactured today (except the Speed King, which they still make).

my drum teacher says he likes the ludwig speedking but he likes the newer ones better. he says the gretch floating action is a great pedal too. if your looking at dw's i would recomend the 9000 or 5000 if you can afford.

Speedkings are definitely unique in their feel, I played them for many years before I switched to a DW 5000 double bass pedal. You might try a Yamaha Flying Dragon Direct drive as an option.

Speed King is compression springs, no? The difference in feel between compression and expansion is .....a lot! It is not easy to go from one to the other. The compression keeps the pedals footboard stuck to the bottom of your foot while the expansion is a tad slower on rebound. Also most expansion pedal are off center design while the SK is in straight allignment with the beater, delivering 100% of what you put into it.

You should check out the new DW 5000 heel less pedal. Go to dwdrums.com and go to the DW5000 page. Then scroll down to the bottom. It feels very smooth and fast. Don't know if you can buy it yet but you can call DW and find out when it will be available.

If you're looking for another pedal type, you really need to get your feet into a drum store and "try out" a bunch of different pedals. A buddy drummer of mine has owned Axis, Iron Cobra, and DW pedals, and he keeps going back to his Ludwig Speed King. Slightly modified.
