Snare Wire Problem

Hey

I have a bit of a problem with my snare wires. I have a Mapex QR snare. I took out the snare wires as I wanted to change the head, and put in a new head. However, after installing the wires back again, the drum gives a horrible buzz, whenever I strike the snare drum. I think I might have tightened the snares too much, so I loosened them a bit, but it's still the same problem. Whenever I strike the drum, it gives a horrible buzz.

Can anyone help me?

Have you tried experimenting with the tuning of the resonant head? The snare wires and the head interact in mysterious ways!

make sure the snare wires are on the correct side and the wires are centered correctly.

I don't. have any pictures but if you look at the snare wires make sure the soldered end side is against the drum head so the snare wires sit properly and make sure the snare wires are centered properly when the snare is turned on.

Did you put a reso-head back on? If so, what kind? You wouldn't be the first person to put a batter on the reso-side, either as an experiment or by mistake.

Along with the others here, the snare strainer (wires) should be on correctly, and the reso-head should be tuned according to your liking, but evenly around the rim. Personally, I go a little lower on tension with the lugs that straddle the strainer wires. If the snare is tuned correctly, and the strainer is tensioned accordingly, there should be minimal "buzz"...but understand that the only way to kill the buzz completely would be to choke the strainer too tight or something to that effect. Then the drum wouldn't sound good.

Slight buzz is normal and shouldn't affect live sound environments like you might think.
Excessive buzzing is indicitive of poorly tuned or incorrectly tuned batter/reso and strainer tension.

I have pretty much fixed the problem. There's still a buzz, but that's due to the ringing of the snare.
