Ok. Here is the deal. Im getting really sick of my steel snare, and im looking to get some good old fashioned wood.
Which wood, im not sure. All i know is that i played a pearl maple free floating snare at GC and.....it sounded like sex. (am i allowed to say that?) But i loved it. However, it costs around 380 dollars. Granted i could spend that much, id rather get soemthing cheaper.
Basically wahtim asking is what is a good quality snare drum, that has a great sound, looks good, and is a little more affordable?
thanks in advance

Go with Gretsch. This particular drum is $259 and is the 10-ply maple model. My drum set teacher has one and it sounds amazing. It has a nice pop and woody sound when tuned up high; I haven't heard it tuned low so I don't know how it sounds but since it is a Gretsch, it's gotta be great.

If you really want the Pearl Free Floating Maple snare, try interstatemusic.com. You should be able to get this snare for under $300 or just a little over $300.

i have personally played all of these and they all sound really good!
what i would suggest is going to your local music store and lining up as many snares in your price range and then pick the one you like most...

If you can get a deal like JayP did with the BP, then I highly suggest the BP.

No, I think you misunderstood the meaning of the thread.
Tamadrummer132 created this because he's interested on bying a wooden snare drum and he was asking some opinions..
This wasn't an anti-snare drum thread.

Ok. Here is the deal. Im getting really sick of my steel snare, and im looking to get some good old fashioned wood.
You could get a wood shell and have it drilled for the hardware that's on your metal shell snare. When you tire of the wood, switch hardware back to metal shell. You can request any bearing edge to just about mimic any drum sound (vintage-round over, modern-dbl 45 etc). Get a hi-quality drum in the exact size and finish that 'you' want for le$$ than a big name offering.

Ron Bushy playing with Iron Butterfly probably could have pulled that off.

amdrumparts.com. I got a 14x7 Keller shell with gold hardware, tube lugs, basic strainer, and diecast hoops for just under $300. They will do the edges, snare bed, and drilling if you buy the hardware from them too. You just have to assemble it and finish it if you want to. It takes about 2 weeks to get it and it's professional quality. Mine sounds as good as any $800 Sonor snare.
