i'm 16, in a metal / punk / eperimental band and our drum set isn't right.

i'm wondering if i should get a new set or new heads. the heads i know are screwed to no end. but the persion who bought the drums keeps arguing with me about the tuning of. he wants them loose but when they are loose the snare rattles excessivly and sounds horrible, and the toms sound like the boom sound when you beat on a pickup truck with your wrist, and also i'm not trying to bring them down but they just dont know how to take care of a drum set. but anyways with that i dont want to spend money on a new set if i can resurect this one. heres what i have, i'll post the sizes and brand later;

Edit: i relized how badly i worded that up there. the heads are bent, so that is the reasion why they sound like crap, so i'll get new heads if i dont get a new set. although with how badly the heads are right now, new heads would make a world of difference.

1 kick (not double)
1 bass
2 toms (the ones on the bass)
1 floor tom
1 crash
1 hi-hat
1 china (no stand for it, so i can use it)

Sounds like 1 too many drummers in this equation. You're playing someone elses kit and they want control of the sound. Walk away. Let them do whatever they want to do with their drums. Unless you can buy this kit, make it yours, and start calling the shots on what it's gonna sound like, I wouldn't spend 1 dime on it, for someone else.

yes i am a drummer, i've been playing for 4 years, i've just not been around enough drummers to get the idea of what a drum set should sound like in real life. the reasion i think that they untune the drums are because they want the heads to last. as for the set brand i'll post later today.

Hi. I'm Nick Cavnaugh, and I've been playing about two years. most people say its not enough to be good, but in the SOA band, I beat people 2 yrs. older than me (one taking lessons for 5 years) hands down. I have a little advice; first, try to tune top head, bottom head, and snares to the tightest settings. I f it still seems rattly, check the drum with the snares off.

If :

A: The tuning did the trick, don't do anything
B: Snares work perfectly / top head still rattles, buy a new head
C: Drum has bad fade, buy new heads
D: drum good / snares bad fade, new snares
E: nothing works, persuade your mom for a new snare drum: more complex
