Tom On A Snare Stand Question

i saw grauntersdad's thread on snare baskets. well, same question, but instead of a snare, what's you guy's's's's's preferance on a 12x8" in the basket. ontop, or just resting in there? thanks, alex

I've seen plenty of guys do that, though I my only question would be how much resonance would you lose from the drum with the sound going down into the stand?

I ran a 14x10 Ludwig Vistalite tom like that for over 25 years. And just like the snare, Tom seated in the basket, tight enough to move the drum around and the stand not fall off the bottom of it. Charlie Watts has been doin' it for 35 or so years, with his Gretsch kit. If you're worried about sound being "choked" by the stand, a simple A/B test will determine if that's true "with your drum" or not. Suspend it, play it and listen......put it on a stand, play it and listen. I'm planning on using RIMS on my Rogers rack toms, regardless.

I prefer my side toms on legs.

More importantly to me, is if you're set up on carpet...there goes some resonance..... & will anyone, apart from yourself notice the difference between the sound of a floating tom or one on legs/stand?

Appropriate skins, good tuning & correct floor/venue acoustics are the issues for me.
I'm fussy with my drum sound but struggle to find much relevance in the "sound going down into the stand" issue.

I think he's talking about the tom that sits over his bass drum. Like Harry said, do an A/B comparison and listen for yourself. Lots of "cats" as Harry likes to put it, use the snare stands for toms.

I wouldn't hesitate to have my front toms on stands if it was necessary to get them into the desired position, but it's more iron to lug around.

It's not at the drivers seat where you'll really notice if it's choking your rack tom. It's out in front where you notice, as the sound is doesn't project or sustain like it should.

well i compared when i put it on the stand. but in order to do that, i had to take the mount off, which isn't that bad because the newer gts mounts just go on two lugs (reasons to love gretsch) so it was easy. and i tried it at a gig and the drummer who used my set said he couldn't tell the difference between a free floating tom on the left side ( it was a pacific 14x11" with the gretsch mount) and the gretsch tom on a snare stand. the resonance sounded fine out in front of the set. so i'm going to go with keeping the tom on the snare stand in the basket.
