Snare Basket

Does anyone have a preference or opinion, as to which of the below pictured methods, of putting the snare in the basket, would be better. One is sitting completely down in the basket, the other is sitting on the first rim of the snare hoop. I am obviously concerned about sound and not looks or convenience.

Personally I have it sitting right in the basket and the basket just loose enough so the drum does not move too much but is not clamped tightly.

I like the claw grip clamped tight because I do a lot of pretty hard rim shots with my 3 piece and want the snare in a fixed, solid position so the angle of attack doesn't change at all.

I've had the snare both ways, and unless the basket is clamped real tight, the difference is not really noticeable on my metal 6.5's.

But on a piccollo, it may make a difference.

I'd have someone play the drum (if you can) to see if you can tell any difference.

Maybe just try it both ways for a while, and after you get used to that drum (since it's new..lucky), you'll probably be able to tell more.

I used a snare stand for my rack tom for a while, and when the toms rim was sitting more on top of the basket, it sounded a bit more open to me, so I set the tom up that way.

But since my snares are metal, and 6.5, having them in the basket didn't make much difference, as they are open sounding anyway, so I just don't clamp the crap out of it.

I like the first... with, as someone above said, the snare just loose... not clamped. Sort of minimizing contact.

Just seems like bad feng shui to have any other way.

In order to get the perfect angle on my snare drum...I put the one arm of the basket (facing me) all the way on the drum (view 1), ...the other two arms...facing away (think of a Y) ...I utilize view 2 :)

I set mine pretty much the same way that TitanSound does.. all the way in the basket without too much clamping force..

On my main snare, I set it so that the grips just barely touch the rims.. it's an edge so it's heavy enough to stay put. for the smaller side snare I set it so that I can lift an edge of the rim out of the basket with minimal force.

That's always worked well for me and doesn't compromise the sound of the drum in any way...

I like mine with the snare down in it, tight enough to hand off like harry said, but also like Bob Gatzen likes it, with the ability to pop it out if needed. So I would say secure, but not overtightened.

i like mine sitting right in to the snare basket. it just feels more sturdy to me.
i don't overtighten it, just tight enough to it stays in there with out coming out of the offchance that i knock it with my leg and it falls out.
