Hey,

I am about to purchase a new Yamaha Absolute Maple Kit.
And I have a specific sound I want from my kit. (within reason)

I am a Phil Collins fan, and I really appreciated the sound he
brought out of the Gretsch kit he played during the introduction
to his final tour.

I know I'm dealing with a diffrent kit, and simply the difference
in size, wood type, and heads etc. can have an astronomical impact
on the tone of the drums.

This will be my first pro kit.
Can anyone direct me to the type of heads to use in order to achive
the same jungle drum effect?

Well I couldn't tell you his exact setup but I know phil uses big drums, and lots of them. I've seen them setup a lot of the time "concert" style, that is, without reso heads on the toms. His kit was probably maple, so if you get a maple set in the same sizes, then it will not be difficult to make the same sound.

Keep in mind that recording technique and microphones are also a large contributor to how a drum sounds recorded, so that cannot be replicated exactly to your ears.

Although I could only find it in French: http://www.philcollinsdrums.com/fr/batteries.html

Evans G1s all around will give you a great and versatile sound. I recommend coated heads all around for a classic warm sound, but the clear versions are nice as well. They are also consistently well made, unlike Remo Ambassadors I've dealt with before.
