hey i just bought a pearl vision kit (looooovvveeeee it, great kit) but im finding it hard to get the snare the way i want it, now my old snare was off a 70s pearl wood fiberglass kit which i played with a clear remo emperor and it that great under head dampener (which my new one dosent) which dried the sound out and gave it the really crisp funk sound

now i love the tones that my new snare is giving but id really like to sorta replicate my old sound

any ideas?

thing is the new one has better tones and projection in it like i can tell its a better drum but id just like it to have a similar feel im not just trying to replicate the sound

Are you using the stock Protone heads on it? First thing I'd do is change them out. You can get a lot of different sounds from a coated Ambassador batter and hazy snare side Ambassador.

Changing out the heads is the first thing I do. Now I did not have to do that with my Pearl Ultracast since it came from Pearl with Ambassadors On my old Pearl Steel snare I went with a CS Power Dot and and Aquarian snare head. Nice and thin so very responsive. The stock snare that came with my ELX's Have a the same setup as the Steel snare.

Change the head, but there are a couple different dampeners that clamp onto the top rim that sort of replicates the old internals to get the sound you want.

I say sort of, because they are better because they let you get the full sound from the head when it's struck, but when the head comes back up, then it's muffled creating better ring control.

Pearl makes one of these.

You may be able to order this from your drum shop, so you just take the part number from the link.
Maybe you can get a better price from your drum shop too.

Yamaha used to make them a long time ago, almost like the Pearl, but I'm not sure if they still do.
Remo made one as well called a Dave Weckl Active Snare Gate.
