My friend John's birthday was a couple of weeks back. For his present me and my g/f and band mates all chipped in to pay for a session at our rehearsal studio to have some fun.

I made a few backing tracks on my laptop using using Reason. Along with the studios 5k Turbosound this made things interesting!! We mic'ed up the kick drums and put them through the PA along with the laptop. I had to use a click over the PA so we could both hear it, I left my headphone amp at home! We recorded the session with 2 condensers so the quality is not great and my kit comes through more for some reason. Considering he has not played a kit in 10 years he was able to keep up very well and only made a few timing related mistakes but nothing major.

We store all our own gear there so it was just a case of getting another kit. The studio kits are Pearl Exports (newer version) in great condition and my kit is a '96 Export with a 14x6.5 brass Free Floater and a 13x3 Maple piccolo with a mixture of A Custom, A and K cymbals.

It was a great experience, playing with dynamics and off another drummer. Here are a couple of pictures and excerpts from what I recorded. Some of the jams were over 20 minutes long!!!! Everything is made up as we went along with just the backing tracks as a guide :)

What can I say, I'm just pissed you cheated on me with another drummer! :P

Sounds good, I'd kill to still be able to play like that after 10 years of nothing!
