I know Gavin Harrison uses a Pinstripe on his snare, and I love his snare sound. But Im afraid that a pinstripe might dry out the drum to much. Has anyone tried a Pinstripe on the snare? Im looking for that fat punch-in-the-gut sound like Gavin's snare on the song "deadwing" by Porcupine Tree.

Why not ask Gavin himself? He has a Q&A on these forums... Look in the "Drummers" section.

Honestly, it depends on what snare you have. 9 out of 10 people here could use a pinstripe and love it but on YOUR snare you may not like the sound.

Pinstripe on a snare that's like a diplomat on a bass drum you can do it but I wouldn't. suggest it.if you want a fat beefy snare sound get a deeper wood snare not metal.

I used a clear Pinstripe on a snare in the studio recently. I wanted a good deep 909 kind of sound without resorting to electronics or triggers. It came out exactly the way I wanted. I did have the head de-tuned though.

If you want a real low AC/DC kind of punch to your snare, go for it!

I've been in a similar mission for my one piece 14 x 6.5 maple snare. I've tried Powerstroke 3, Ambassador, CS, Emperor, Emperor X, Pinstripe and have landed on the the REMO Vintage A - it's well worth a try.

I've never heard of a vintage A does the A stand for Ambassador?

I have a black panther 14X6.5 traditional maple...and i put a coated pinstripe on the snare
And it made it ring so much...i hated it
So i have an coated ambassador on it the moment
and it sounds nice... got a good fat punchy sound without the horrible ring it used to have
Might try an emperor X soon

thats kind of ironic, I thought pinstripes were supposed to reduce ring.

I have a Powerstroke on my13 by 4 snare - it has a pinstripe around it so does that mean it's related to Pinstripes? In any case, controlling ring with my drums is a huge issue so I like the extra dampening of the Powerstroke.

The pinstripe will not dry out. This is because there is no oil between the two ply heads. The odd swirl you see between the head is air pockets. I switched to Remo's new Powerstroke X with clear dot. Its the best snare head for my style and would highly recommend it.

Hell, be sure you get a coated pinstripe. A clear pinstripe might let some meagre vestige of tone escape from the drum. ;-)

I play a 7x14 snare, so I can probably get a lot of tone out of my drum still. =)
