Remo clear Controlled Sound: thoughts?

my vintage Sonors came with these but they were so old, i never got a chance to play them before i put new heads on.

i've been seeing some photos of vintage Sonors and seeing these heads on them, so it seems like they're possibly the preferred ones for these beechwood (3 ply i believe) drums.

any users want to give their opinions on these heads? i need to replace my heads and am deciding between these with the dots or Evans EC2 clears.

CS heads are a different animal from EC2's. They are more open sounding and not as round and focused. They do have more focus because of the dot and I think are a cross between a single and double ply head, but again they're a different kind of head than a 2 ply head with a muffle ring which is what the EC2 is.

I've been thinking of trying these on my '71 3-ply Luddies, for that old school look and sound. Darren over at WestCoast Drums put these on his DW kit and liked them.

Indeed, they would probably work great on your 3 ply Sonor shells. It's an Ambassador head with a dot on it. I'd say my 3 favorite drum heads for "vintage" kits, Ambassador, CS and Powerstroke3.

I really like the CS Black Dots.

They are the forgotten drum head, even though they were really popular for a time, and not just on the Vistalite/acrylic kits.

They are great on snares too.

I mainly use Coated Ambassadors, but every once in a while I'll use the Black Dots.

They're a nice sounding (but different) head with good feel and durability.

I'd check out one on a small drum (for cost) to see if you dig it.

They sound great on bigger drums, so the test (to my ears anyway) is how you like it on the smaller drums.
If you like the sound on say a 10" to a 13", you'll most likely love it on bigger drums.
