Ludwig Supra Heads?

Hi All,

I'm looking to replace the heads on a newly aquired Supra.

Of course there's the Ambassaor's. I'd like a little dampening, but also retain the playability.

...Evans Power Center Reverse Dot Coated ?

Any experience with this or other heads would be much appreciated, Oh playing acoustic rock etc.

With my '67 5" Supraphonic, I use a medium, coated Ludwig WeatherMaster on top and a WeatherMaster snare-side on the bottom. Sounds great and is very responsive and super versatile. Don't even need to use the internal muffler.

Any muffled head really is a crime to use on these drums.

I had PC Reverse Dot on a supra and it was a nice head. I use it on all my snares actually. It's not muffled so there would be no crime, but it's just slightly heavier to add some focus.

I've found the Evans Power Center to be my favorite on the Supra. The CS revrese black dot comes in second.

Check out Remo's Vintage A Commemorative head. This is the description from Remo.

Vintage Ambassador the head that changed the world in 1957! Constructed of 2-ply 7.5- and 3-mil polyester film.

Like you, I want a little dampening. I believe a regular Ambassador is 10-mil single ply. I just ordered one yesterday. Ludwigvondrumcrazy, another forum member, has some experience with them.

I don't own a Supra but have used both of these reverse dot heads on my Yamaha brass(Paul Leim model) with nice results. I may or may not use a half or quarter of a Moon Gel depending on the situation.

If I owned a Supra (and yes I'd like to at one point), I might use an Aquarian Satin Texture Coat head. They are just slightly warmer than an Ambassador and the coating lasts forever for brushes. There's also the Aquarian Studio-X Coated which is the same head with a (thin) dampening ring underneath. With the latter I don't think dampening would be needed (per your current prefs) as the Supras are Ludalloy (unless you have an older COB model).

I own to supras, a 1967 mint 5x14 and a newer 6.5x14. I've tried all different kinds of heads, but this is what I and many other people, pros and joes, use on their supras. Coated Emperor, coated Ambassador, coated Evans PC reverse dot, coated Remo reverse dot, Ludwig weathermaster stock heads. I personally like the Coated Emperors or Ambassadors the best. NO muffling! Ambassadors are great heads on that drum. A little brighter than the Evans power center reversre dot. I like the Evans heads also. I've used a bunch of both.

I liked the Ambassador and diplomat coated batter heads, and now I have an Aquarian Vintage on top and it mellows out the sound which I like.

If you have a new Supra, it came with great heads, batter and reso. If this is the case, no need to rush out for replacements. Joey

Yeah it's "newly aquired" not new...70's.

Just took it apart cleaned/polished, new snare wires etc.

Ready for heads...more to follow. '-)
