Hello

I just received my brand new BP 6.5 x 14 maple snare! I have been a working drummer for
30 years, and believe it or not, this is my first maple snare!

I am disappointed initially. I don't like to crank the heads, but instead, let the drum breathe. I play all kinds of styles, jazz trios/quartets (brushes), to rock. The stock head is a Remo coated Ambassador.
This stock head seems totally dead. No rebound. No matter what tension. Also, I like my drums to ring a bit, but this one is excessive. Any recommendations for a nice coated head that will not choke the drum? Is the stock amb. on this drum the same quality as a stand-alone head?
I'm perplexed....

You may have just gotten a bad head from Remo. Their quality control seems suspect lately. The last 2 Remo heads I bought were dead just like you describe. I have since switched to Evans G1 and PC reverse dot for my snares.

I have a black panther traditional maple 14X6.5
The batter head was ok but i decided to change to a coated pinstripe...which really wasnt a good idea as it just made the drum ring excessively... it was horrible... the only way to get rid of it was by sticking like 3 pieces of moongel on it...which just made the drum sound flat and lifeless
So i put on a coated ambassador and left the stock resonant on
And it doesnt ring anymore and sounds good without moongel
So the resonant is perfectly fine...just the batter head wasnt to good
Just cheap crappy ones black panther can get their hands on to shove on so its useable straight out the box
hope that helps :)

Try the Aquarian Texture Coated with the new Z100 coating. I have just recently tried one with reverse dot and liked it so much I put the Z100 on all my toms, too. It is very versatile and sounds FANTASTIC with brushes...just effortless.
