Hey guys. I did a search for this and couldn't seem to find a thread about it. I have had a couple parents approach me about helping their 12-13 year olds out on the drums. Just give them a few lessons and such. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

First, I don't wanna try to get too deep into the issue... but do you think that you are qualified to give them lessons? I know that it doesn't appear as if its going to be a steady thing, but its a serious question that you should ask yourself. Are you going to be able to teach them basic notation, fundamentals of technique etc?

It's just a thought. I'm not trying to discourage you from doing it, but rather trying to offer a sound suggestion/question before you dive in.

Lessons for a beginner can range from $25.00 per hour to $50.00 per hour. As the instruction becomes more indepth, the charge sometimes rises with it. I've seen it at $75.00 a lesson in some instances. But thats only in advanced skills.

It also depends what kind of education that the kids and their parents are looking for. I mean, if the lessons are to be practical, and less technical, there is a different approach for each. I've never had techincal lessons, only practical, because so far that is all I was looking for; now that I've decided to take drumming more seriously, I'm looking for a school where I can be taught in-depth notation, rudiments, and other such technical aspects of drumming that are very tedious to a beginner, or a casual drummer.

I would look around in your area and see what the going rate is. Rates vary by your location. Around here, stores and private teachers charge at least $20/HALF hour. Some people on this forum think that's too much, some think it's cheap. It depends. What I would personally do is find out what the local stores charge, and charge $3-$5 less. I only get $10 of the $20 that my students pay at the store I teach at. I also teach a bandmate's 12 year old but I only charge $15. That way I'm still getting more than I'd get for teaching a student at the store but I'm still charging less than what they'd have to pay at a store.

I believe that I would be qualified to give lessons. I've been playing set for 15 years. I marched tenors in high school and went to college 2 years on drumset scholarship. I feel that I could teach proper technique, dynamics, various rudiments and such. One of the kids is in band already but there isnt much emphasis on drumset at his school, only snare, bass, timpani, etc. The other kid has been bugging his dad about playing drums and he wants to see if its something he really wants to persue or not. Im not saying that I could give Berklee-style education, but I think I could give quite a few pointers and that the kids would benefit from my knowledge. Thanks for the replies guys...

Excellent experience buddy. You have a nice diverse first hand knowledge that I'm sure would be a of great use in teaching. Let us know how it goes.

I pay $50 for one hour of private instruction. Ten lessons pre-paid is $400.

That's half the price of psycho-therapy! Such a deal.
