View Full Version : No rebound on toms?

I'm having a problem with all of my toms... Regardless of what I try, I can't seem to get any decent amount of rebound on them. I'm using clear emperors on my 13"/14" toms and a coated weatherking ambassador on my floor tom. I've tried changing the heads with some spares I have, but the problem still seems to be the same - almost zero rebound.

I've tried tuning everything every which way, but nothing seems to work. The set itself is an old (15+ years probably) Pearl Export, is it possible that the actual drums could be screwed? It's extremely annoying because I come home after going to one of my lessons where the drum set feels like heaven, then I come home and it just feels pretty much dead. I'm going to be bringing one of the toms in soon to see if I'm just an idiot, but does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

If you want a lot of rebound, use only single-ply heads (Ambassadors, for example) and tune them fairly high. However, if you want to be able to play any kit no matter how the toms are tuned, learn to play with less rebound. It takes some work to get your hands up to the required speed, endurance and strength, but the work totally pays off.

I don't really want a lot of rebound, though, I just want some. As it is, it's impossible to do double strokes on the toms, the second stroke is just dead. It feels very odd playing and having the stick just kind of die against the drum. I hadn't even considered 1 plys as I've always played on 2's, and with the exception of my kit, the rebound has been fine.

I'll check it out. It's not like I don't know how to tune or anything though, I've played often enough on sets other than mine own and had no problem.

It may be your technique or it may be your drums. I have a 16" floor tom that went out of round and was next to impossible to get a decent rebound from it. It sits next to my kit as a laptop table now. Maybe your drums have warped. Just a thought...

Oh, yeah, I'm guessing it's the drums.. They're god knows how old now, and you can visibly see the malformation of some of them :P It's hard to explain, but playing on them just feels very stiff and dead. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with technique as I have no problem and am pretty much in heaven any time I play someone on someone else's set.

Its not about tuning.. its about the ability to get rebound off any surface.

Tried that once but got tomato sauce all over my shoes and just at the crucial moment my bass drum slid away from me ;o)

OK, OK you were all thinking the same!

I don't really follow.. I don't see what sort of "technique" could possibly used to get rebound, as when it hits the head it pretty much just dies. I've tried every combination of tuning the batter/reso head every which way and nothing seems to change the deadness.

It's difficult to explain, I think, maybe you have to play on a 20 year old warped set to understand :P

Druid's example of playing on a pizza is actually what jojo does in the dvd. You'll need to see it to get the idea . Its everything to do with the mechanics of how to hold and strike the stick. He's broken it down step by step and explained it in great detail.

Hey, trust me ok, just get the dvd. You'll thank me for it. I promise ; )

Except for pizza, there should always be a rebound so your problem could be the heads.
I assume you use your own sticks all the time. I always use Remo coated pinstripe on my toms so I get deep, slightly damped tones but I still get the rebound, they really growl and I have have used them on different makes of kits and they are always consistent. But that may not be your situation, I just can't help but think your heads are dead, maybe time for a change.

It's all about the player and whether or not he/she can get rebound on any surface. Rick Latham show me on a magazine that he asked me to hold up. It was AWESOME!
