DW and Craviotto parted ways a while back. As I understand it, DW is using Vaughn Craft shells on thier solids now.

Yep. Most of the drums had the old drop throw off on them. I wasn't real impressed with them. The Delta throw off is OK, but it's real heavy. Most of the new drums I've seen have a Dunnett throw off on them. I think that's a step in the right direction.

I have another snare in route. It's a 12 X ?. I tried a couple of different 10 inchers and didn't like them at all. The 12 may fit the bill for a high pitched side snare. We'll see.

I`d love to try this DW solid shell! Do those DW drums come with die-cast hoops now? I saw Peter Erskine using a DW with die-cast hoops as well as Billy Ward.
Or did you have to add those die-casts?

That would be tough.

If I'm messing around with a 3 up 2 down, 8 - 16 inch toms, the 13 usually ends up on the stand. It seems to blend in sonically the best.

The brass drum is probably used the most. It sounds warm, but cuts though. That drum is rolled and welded. Nothing special but, it just sounds great. I put new heads on it last night. I'll be playing it today.

That would probably be the one. Kinda funny because it's the least impressive. I really like brass snares.

I added the hoops. At the time I was playing with some guys who were into 60s and 70s classic rock stuff, Lots of ballards and cross sticking. The hoops hepled a lot to focus the sound and added volume. I like die cast hoops on wood snares. It wakes em up.

The Edge doesn't get used very much. Great drum. I seem to always be messing around with the 13, the brass drum, or the Ludwig BB.

I don't have any recent recordings. I need to get around to that one of these days.

I bought most of the Trick throw offs from Drummer World member Skitch. They came with a mounting plate so I didn't need to drill the shells. The 13 and the Edge didn't need the plate. At the time they were around $75.00. I've had them for a couple of years.

They're expensive, but bullet proof. I think the best throw off on the market.

Here's the latest. I'm not too sure about what's up with this one.

The family was in Hollywierd the other night. We got stuck in traffic. 5:00 rush hour. Sucked big time. We decided to grab some food and let things settle down. I had three drinks and felt no pain.

Then we went to GC and Sam Ash. I spotted this one at GC. I liked it, but since I was a little buzzed I decided it may not be the best time to buy a drum. Well, not until the next morning when I called them and had it shipped.

This was probably refinished. The inside of the shell is the same color as the out side. No born date or note stamped on the shell. My 6.5 Craviotto was built in 98. This has a serial number that is 3,000 lower. Also a single badge instead of two, and the rods are standard and not true pitch. It was listed as a 3.5 X 13. It's a 3.5 X 12. Friggin GC.

Anyway I messed around with it today and it sounds pretty cool. It's cranked way up. It has more body than a 10. I dunno, I had two tens and they were short lived.

This one is kinda cool.

That is unusual that the inside is colored and no re-rings. It's probably early to mid 90's. Do the bearing edges look like DW's standard 45's? It's a good looking snare though.

I haven't had the heads off the drum, but from what I can see the edges look good and are typical of a DW. The shell looks to be six ply.

I too have a 6.5x14 DW/Craviotto, mine was made in 2000, I believe. I think it's the most impressive wood snare you can find. But, like you - I've come to love brass and I play my Black Beauty most of the time.

I'm thinking about a 6.5 brass drum. One of the cast shells. A 3.5 or 4 would be cool too.

I'm probably going to sell off the odds and ends and keep the Dubs and Ludwigs. I just don't use the others much. Seemed like a good idea at the time. That would give me a good excuse to buy some more.

The Craviottos are just awesome. I had a 4 X 14 that I sold last year. I should have kept that one. Oh well.

The Feb 08 issue of Drum Magizine had a feature section on solid shell snares. It said that DW made the switch in 04.

My guess would be that DW still had Craviotto shells on hand or were using both suppliers shells.

I've seen four versions of DW/Craviotto snares. Some had a round black and gold badge. Some had a green oval badge, and a few had a pinkish oval badge. Some of the later drums had the solid shell badge on the vent and the Craviotto diamond logo stamped inside of the shell.

There may be other variations.

I played the red drum again yesterday and decided it was pitched way too high. 98 over 90 on the drum dial. The dial readings were more of a curiosity. The drum sounded out of place with the rest of my kit.

Since the heads had be cranked way up I decided to replace them. I went with an Ambassador and Hazy Ambassador. I replaced the snare straps with Puresound cables and routed them a little differently where thay attach to the throw off. The wires drop clean now. Before I was still getting a snare sound when the wires were dropped. Another reason I replaced the drop style throw offs with the Tricks.

Once I had the drum apart I checked all the nuts and bolts.Many were loose. One of the lug bolts was too short and a couple others had the heads starting to strip out. I dug around in my parts box and was lucky to find three new bolts that fit.

The rubber gaskets that are usually found between the lugs and the shell were not on this drum. I don't know if they were left off or the previous owner removed them. The lugs had a black felt insert inside of them. I hadn't seen that before. Could be the way they built them before they started using the gaskets.

Today I'll mess around with tuning a try to get this snare to blend in a little better. The 12 seems to be more what I'm looking for. I've had two 10s. A 5 X 10 DW and a Sonor jungle jingle friggin tamborine thing. Hated both of then. The reminded me of beating on Mom's pots and pans with spoons when I was a kid. I'm sure they work well for some things. I just didnt like the sound at all.

Anyway. This should keep me busy for a few hours.

You will probably enjoy the 12.. I have a 5 1/2 x 12 natural finish that I bought, (after being told it was a 13).. and I love the thing.. and use it as my main snare in smaller places.. It is really a great sounding drum.

My other is a 6x13 Edge in a natural quilted maple finish.. again, a great drum.

Here's a pic I took some time back (before I got rid of the Weckl)..

I love the mini lugs on the edge.. I do need to get a trick for it though.

I was thinking it's birch. Might of even been cut down. I dunno. It was a fairly inexpensive way to try out a 12.

With a lower tuning the little 12 sounded really good. It blended in well with the brass drum and worked really well with the 13.

The hole spacing for the Nickleworks and Trick throw offs are the same. You would need to find a couple of bolts though. The ones that come on the Trick will be way too short.

Nice drums! That Edge looks great with the mini lugs.
