Time for new heads!

Hello all!

I've had a Yamaha Oak Custom 4-piece kit for quite some time now (22" x 17", 16" x 16",10" x 8" and 12" x 9") and I need some new heads!

My drum teacher has recommended Evans Coated G2's and I'm not too familiar with them since I've used Remos for my entire drum career. I really want heads that will make my toms sing so should I go with the G2's or something else??

Since you have used remo that much.. evans g2 heads are pretty much the same as remo emperor heads. Clear emperor heads over clear ambassador heads gives a very good all-round sound.

I just replaced coated G2s with clear G2s on my Oak Custom and while they are both great heads, I prefer the coated on my Oaks.

Remo Emperors have more tone. G2's are deader. Evans uses more oil between the plys.

Just as a clarifier.....

There is NO OIL in ANY drum head other than Evans Hydraulic heads.

The colors or "oil" that can sometimes be seen in a 2 ply head is called Newton rings.

It's caused by light reflecting between the 2 plies of film.

IF you see a lot of them on an Emperor, Pinstripe, or a G2, the head will sound deader because there is more space between the plies.

A head without any space between the plies (that looks totally clear) will tune up & get a good sound easier.

It's kinda easy to tell the difference because the "looser" filmed heads will feel more 'floppy' and sound low and dead when you tap on them.

Sometimes the only way to find out "what works" is to give it a try. Since you're a Remo guy (me too) single ply heads (Ambassador and Controlled Sound) are gonna let those toms "sing" more than a 2 ply (Emperor). I used to run Powerstroke3 heads on my Luddy maples, but I had big toms (15, 16, 18). P3's would sound killer on the Oaks, but might not be the sound you're after. Buddy of mine has a Yamaha Oak set, and they are loud drums, so even a Pinstripe head won't deaden the drum as much as some.

Sometimes the only way to find out "what works" is to give it a try.

Amen. One way to do this without going broke is to get two or three of the heads you're considering for just one of your drums, say a 12", and try them out in succession. Cheaper than springing for a whole set of them. And you learn a lot even if you don't find the sound you're looking for.
