Ok, I'm trying to figure out the difference in the two and so far all i have been able to find is either the Samba is simply faster or faster and with a swing like ride pattern.
The Bossa Nova pattern im playing is a 2+3 clave with the basic Ostinato under it.

so first off is this right?

and what difference would a samba have?

You're right about the speed. Samba is generally a heap faster.

The only other thing I'd say (correct me if I'm wrong), bossa is an 8th note feel, while samba is more of a 16th feel.

Hi!

First difference: tempo, samba is faster, bossa is more smooth.

Second: you play bossa on the rim of the snare (bossa's clave), samba is with the snare itself. Ok, the bass drum can be the same, but the syncopation on snr makes the difference.

Third: The bossa´s groups are small, 3 or 5 pals. Samba? jaja! can be hundreds.

If you wanna listen bossa, go with Jobim, Vinicius, Powell, etc...
If you want Samba, must ear the "Scolas do Samba".

Ok, by and sorry for my "tarzan style" on writting.

Best regards

Good stuff... Your video was loaded with info! Rhythms are far more interesting when you have a sense of their history and evolution. Now I have something to keep me occupied for a while!

The only other thing I'd say (correct me if I'm wrong), bossa is an 8th note feel, while samba is more of a 16th feel.
Samba is also 8th feeling. Usually written in 2/2 bar, like most latin styles. I'd almost think about the opposite. Bossa is almost "laying" on every beat while samba is a lot lighter and laying after longer periods. The only way to keep samba floating is laying on the surdo strokes (every half-note). Many samba schools have the second half-note as the lowest surdo and heaviest beat in the bar, but it depends on the school.
Listen to the school of Manguera and Imperatriz from Rio and the ensembles Timbalada (a bit more samba-reggae) and Olodum. Great stuff there.
