Hello all! I'm new to the site but have dug around and this is definitely a great place to start. I'm brand new to drumming and am looking for a really good Book/DVD. I have looked through the Book/DVD review thread but I don't see anything on "The Rock Drumming System"? Has anyone else had experience with this? Any feedback would be appreciated. A short synopsis of what I've done so far would be: Purchased a Ludwig LM-402 and stand and HQ "Real Feel" 12" Practice pad. Thanks all for your valued input.

Hey, well my drum teacher, teaches me out of the book called The Drumset Musician (by Rod Morgenstein and Rick Mattingly) and its a great book it has beats and fills from beginner to intermediate, and also a CD so you can listen to the beats, and there even is some songs you can play along to. But this book shows like all types of styels alot of rock drumming but also some blues and some other stuff too. Hope this hepled you.

I agree this a great book for beginners. I use it with all of my students. I would also reccomend a good snare drum book to go along with this. Mark Wessels "A fresh Approach to the Snare Drum"

Hi:
I would recommend 2 different books. The first is called the Quintessence of Drumming by Frank May. Great stuff in there - from easy to complicated patterns. All very well explained.
The second is the Rock Drumming System. With the DVD it shows you, from 4 different angles, all of the beats in the books. It goes into a great explaination as to why you play it that way. And all beats/patterns are played twice. Once at a slow tempo, the other at a fast tempo.
Good luck - and welcome to the community.

I know this is an old thread, but I got the rock drumming system (http://www.totaldrumsets.com/rock-drumming-system-review.html) a couple of weeks ago after reading reviews. It's ok I guess, there is alot of stuff to learn which is good, and the play a long tracks are good. The beginner section is aimed at total newbs, but the intermediate section is better to get your teeth stuck into. Overall it looks ok.

I'd never heard of it until you brought it up. Their site doesn't give me a real good feeling about it. They do seem to know how to move product. But I guess it's hard to screw up a rock drumming book too badly, so if you really want to give them your money, go for it. What I would recommend is the Rod Morgenstein book others have mentioned- it's a very clear and thorough introduction to rock drumming by an actual world class musician. The "System" guys appear to be maybe competent local guys with a product idea and a marketing plan, frankly.
You might supplement the RM book with Joel Rothman's Mini Monster book, and/or Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials. And a beginning snare drum book- I like Roy Burns' Elementary Drum Method, myself.
Whoops, I didn't realize this was such an old thread- I wonder how the guy did? He didn't post again after this.

I think that's one of Jared Falk's offerings http://www.jaredfalk.com/what-is-the-drumming-system/.
I would say that private lessons would be the #1 priority for someone in your situation. You will need to learn to read music and develop a correct technique. You will also need to develop coordination and learn styles. A drum teacher will be able to help you with all of these.
