*edit* 03-09-08 - I GOT IN!

For anyone who didn't see my thread requesting well wishes, I auditioned for a band a few weeks ago. They play a mix of blues, funk-ronk, jazz, swing, and honky tonk. We recorded the audition and I just got the mp3's back. The mix isn't perfect. I had two mics as overheads and one on the bass. I'm fairly low in the mix, but considering the setup and that we recorded it live, it's not bad. My bass was almost subsonic in some songs :)

I should find out tomorrow if I got the job. The songs are fun to play. I was able to use sticks, a few different rutes, and even my hands in some songs (notated below).

Those who know me well will probably be a bit surprised by the style and my playing on some of these songs. Enjoy!

Live It Up (http://www.handidrummed.com/Bare%20Bones/rob%20live%20it%20up.mp3) - Played with wood Rutes. Normally I'd use sticks, but we were still trying to regulate the volume (they're not used to rehearsing with an acoustic set), so I used the rutes.

Return to Stone (http://www.handidrummed.com/Bare%20Bones/rob%20return.mp3)

Some Things Never Change (http://www.handidrummed.com/Bare%20Bones/rob%20some%20things.mp3)- I used a plastic Rute in my right hand on the snare head and a regular stick on the cross stick in the beginning of this song. The rest is with my sticks.

Talkin' Don't Count for Nothin' (http://www.handidrummed.com/Bare%20Bones/rob%20talkin.mp3)

Three Dollar Bill (http://www.handidrummed.com/Bare%20Bones/rob%20three%20dollar.mp3)- I used wood Rutes for the whole song.

Til' I Saw You (http://www.handidrummed.com/Bare%20Bones/rob%20til%20i%20saw.mp3)- During the verses I play the snare with the snares off using my hands as a conga like pattern. During the chorus and on the funky break downs I pick up plastic rutes.

Hi Rob,

I thought you sounded good with that band. You picked grooves that served the music well. Your playing was solid and well thought out. Very well done.

The band plays a hodge podge of different styles. I had a hard time trying to figure out where they're at. That said, they sound good.

I hope itworks out. If it doesn't you've got one more audition and, some more experience under your belt. It's all good.

Good luck!

Rob!!!!

What can I say...you`re progressing so well man. Great tunes, nice sound!!
Yes, you served the band well and in my opinion you made them sound great. Another thing I found really impressing was your creativity. Unique grooves, made me dance.

One thing I wanna mention is that you sometimes fall back a bit. These are miliseconds (!) but they decide if the groove is more pushing or pulling. Try to go through, nice and driving.

Other than that I`m simply impressed. Cool stuff, hope you get the job!! And if not, life will go on and more bands wait for a nice drummer. =)

I got in!!! I start rehearsing on Wednesday.

Thanks guys. Freddy - Yeah they do play a mix of styles which isn't everyone's cup of tea I suppose. Seeing as they just play for the love of it and gig fairly regularly around places that accept and appreciate a variety of styles, I think they can get away with it more. If they were ever hoping to make it big it wouldn't happen. They'd have to be more concrete. I enjoy it though because it gives me a chance to play a variety of feels and be more musical.

Karl - Yeah I do slip a little but it was my first time playing with that band and I was still getting used to playing at a lower volume level. That and my nerves :)

I would like to hear them (and your playing), but it's not opening for me. Probably user error.

Great playing and congrats!!!!

Were you playing the Gretsch here?

Yes with my McKenzie Steambent Myrtle Snare. I'll be using my Taye Pro-X with them for rehearsals and gigs. They have a nice rehearsal room so I'll be leaving them there and taking some stands and cymbals back and forth. So I'll be kitless until my Unix comes in except for having my cymbals, snare, and some practice pads. I can at least rig up a practice set that way :)

hey congrats, nothing is more rewarding then hearing your self playing with a good band.

except hearing yourself playing shows with a good band that has fans!

I'm excited to hear how this goes for you!

BTW your playing on those songs was great

kick butt, Rob very cool! I'm just plain happy to see how far you've come from some of your earlier threads of not having people to play with.

The playing is very solid, very groovy, and will get even better, the more you play..

Doesnt really matter how the audition goes, though I hope it goes well ; )........
