I have Vic Firth's peter erskine model, and the stick's fulcrum moves toward the butt of the stick as I play. Am I being too loose? Or is it because I'm hitting the drum at a weird angle?

Chances are you're too loose.

You want to be holding your sticks as loosely as possible, otherwise you will not be using all of the sticks potential and kenetic energy. It may not be your grip at all, it may be your angle, and it may be the way your holding the stick(position not tension). If you are really having a problem with this, do not tighten your grip. worse comes to worse buy stick grips or put electrical tape around the butt end of your stick to increase grip, but never tighten your grip. A tight grip is a hindrance to the physics of your drumming.
