Gents. of the forum. For many years I have wanted to play Late in the evening. By Paul Simon. With Steve Gadd on drums. I am getting close. I have googled everything and came up with some good info. The only thing missing is the sticking pattern.
Any' help would go a long way.
Thanks in advance.

Pick up a copy of "Steve Gadd Up Close" and it shows how its done. Not too difficult, took a little less than a week to learn. It just looks hard, but its just a little muscle memory and ur solid.

Thanks,, Class A. You have to be great to have learned this track in one week. I am on my next decade trying to get this. I will nail it. Then I sleep.

I didnt learn the track, just what was written in the book. It may be a little different, but the general beats should be about the same.
I would suggest starting out with both feet, going four on the floor, then encorporating the hands above it, with Right hand on the cowbell, or rims, or ride cymbal or somthing, and the left hand on the snare. Then eventually move the left hand around different toms.

Years ago I was a self-taught drummer and thought I was pretty good. Then I went to a local drum store and heard the owner in the practice room teaching a student "Late in the Evening" with 2 sticks in each hand. It was a defining moment for me! I immediately signed up for lessons from this cat cuz he blew me away. He taught me to play it among other things (50 ways... etc). It's an amazingly wonderful pattern... once you get the sticking down, you can spend hours moving your hands around the drumset and it always sounds cool!!
Be patient.. it's DEFINATELY worth learning!!

This version of the Mozambique is outlined pretty well in The Drummer's Bible - and comes with great sound clips. I found it pretty easy to learn the pattern thanks to this book.

no offense dude, but i find that your lesson is an excessivley complex way of teaching that beat. I would just personally teach it without anywhere near 11 steps. but that's just me

I have to agree with you. I learned it in two. I first learned the hand pattern shown before by Jason, then i just chugged through the chart a zillion times until i had it on muscle memory.

I just looked at the pattern and picked it up cause A play so much paradiddle stuff that patterns like this now come really naturally to me. But if I were to teach it, I would teach the pattern a beat at a time. I.e. Play the first beat 4 times with a one beat rest. Then the first 2 beats with the 2 beats of rest 4 times. then the first 3 beats with one beat rest 4times. Then the whole thing 4times.
Anything more then that seems excessively complex.

Good news! I think I've figured out a way to make the Mozambique unnecessarily difficult!!
Try this variation... the challenge is to make it actually flow...
Quite simply, play the LH part on the bass drum. It should have a smooth quarter note triplet feel when played against the bell pattern.
HH plays quarters....
When I got that to groove halfway decent, I didn't know what to do with LH. So I started playing rim clicks on upbeat 8ths, so all 8ths were covered between the HH and the rim clicks.
When it starts to flow, try a little accent on the middle note of each BD triplet:
bum...BUM...bum.bum...BUM...bum
See if you can come up with an interesting idea for the LH in this variation.

Yeah... If LH plays a 3/2 clave, LH & BD play the same thing in the first half of the phrase and make an interesting contrast in the second half. If nothing else, it makes a heck of a good exercise on independence... I had to practice that one a bit!!
