Gibralter V Rack Addition!

That's right, I ordered a Gibraltar V Rack. After 2 and a half hours of assembly and part movement I have a GREAT setup!

I recently made the aux hat a stax thing, I flipped my bottom high hat and put my old 12" Wuhan on top, different sound, kinda fun to work with. I'll probably go back to having high hats but it's fun to mess with.

Been a while since I messed with my kit. I almost broke my knee a few weeks ago and when I got home afterward I decided.... what the heck, let's rearrange everything rather than play.
So I did.
Crappy pic but you get the idea. This plays SO well. Both the chinas are under the crashes (easily reachable, looks awkward, though) Twice as playable as it was before.
The third tom is the snaredrum that came with my kit. I have it tuned decently. Since I'm in college and not playing a lot I haven't gotten around to changing the head out but the tom tuning is like Highest, Low, High, Lowest. really cool tonal options there.

To everyone here: My only racks have been standard. I have never used a V or Curved gibraltar rack. The 3-sided "station" v-rack was pretty complete and seemed to be less money than the curved. I cannot see photos of the v-rack kit in this thread right now (it's blocked here while I am deployed)

1. If they were the same price, which rack do you feel works better, a Curved gibraltar rack or the v-rack?

2. To the thread starter: any downsides for the V-rack? (it looks much better than a straight rack)

My setup will mirror Steve Smiths.
Basically: 8/10/12 rack, 14/16 FT single 22" kick.
I will have 3 crash, 1 splash, 1 china and a ride on the rack.

I am leaning toward the V-rack, unless there is a significant reason to go with the curved rack instead.

They can't clamp as well as I would like them to. The V rack suited me better because of the way I like my toms to sit and I figured, why use a straight rack, where's the fun?

V rack was a great choice for me.

I e-mailed massmusic and asked them for pricing on a 3-sided "station" rack and all the components I need.

The more I thought about the geometry, the more sense the v-rack makes, and for the reason you mentioned as well. It will be very nice having the outer ends angled toward me, instead of away, as with a streight rack.

It looks like all the stuff I need will be just under $800.

Well, TBH, massmusic donated gear to our Chapel drum kit. They were always great by me, but thier generosity has earned my loyalty. I'd consider drums only if that wasn't the case. I'd feel bad not to repay massmusic for helping us out. Also, I am on the left coast, the drum shop is on the right coast.

Hey I'm thinking about buying a rack too.
I was thinking of a curved rack with one side extension at the floor tom side and a wing extension at the hi-hat side.
I have about the same set up you do at the moment.
(I do think about buying a second snare floor tom and a few more cymbals)
Do you think it's worth the money to buy such a big rack for a set like this.

definitely worth it, see my arguments against the curved rack above a few posts. I prefer the V rack
