Hey guys i need something new to play and started this thread so all of us could share ideas for a cool sounding fills and grooves...feel free to post a link, a tabbed out transcription, or u could just explain the sticking to your posted fill or groove...i for one love to play with paradiddles and their inversions to come up with some cool grooves....my favorite groove using a paradiddle inversion goes like this

Hand pattern:
rLrrlrrl (repeat....playing the right hand on the bell of the ride and the left hand on the snare...accenting the first stroke on the snare and sounding the others as ghost notes)

Foot pattern:
if ur playing it as 16th notes (which is most logical) play 8 notes with your foot on the high hat and add the bass drum in on the counts of 1, the "and" of one, 2, the "and" and "ah" of two, three, the "and" of three, 4, and the "and" and "ah" of four....or you could just improve and switch things up...(not only with the bass drum but also try moving your hands to diff surfaces and see what u can do

really hope u guys post on this one...thanx and hope u like my contribution...later

My favorite is either a six or nine.

Six - RllrrL

Nine - RllrrLRll

Im with fourstring, the six stroke roll is great for fills and such.

Heres a simple groove, using a double paradiddle.

Try playing a doubleparadiddle w/ the right hand playing the bell of the ride, left on snare, play kick in sequence with the right hand (bell).

For a slight variation that changes the groove play the last L(stroke) of the doubleparadiddle with your RIGHT hand on the bell, it gives the groove a more of a "pickup"

Also, bonham shuffle/purdie shuffle is great fun, I can just sit and warmup with a shuffle and its variations and get STUCK in them forever! Add some six/nine stroke rolls for fills and enjoy!

I agree with the six stroke roll, It's very effective if you can master it, very tricky at first but it pays off. I'll have to try the nine, I just tried it on my desk and it stumped me.

But my favourite....

LrrLrrLr very simple, but when played fast, that single right hand adds a nice twist.

That's the 6/8 afro-cuban hand pattern

Wouldn't it be easier to do a little RllRllRl, or are you one of those crazy lefties

That's a favorite of mine as well. I also like playing the purdie shuffle with the cross stick as well. Cross stick ghosts are a beautiful thing.

One of my favorite lately though when it comes to Purdie (who every day is my all time favorite drummer) is to is to play a variation of the Purdie shuffle that he plays on one his videos here on DW.

The hi-hat plays:

1 + a 2 + a 3 + a 4 + a

and the cross stick plays on 2 & 4 while you tap out the "e" of every beat with your fingers on the snare drum head.

Dude,
I've been getting some serious milage out of that groove for years. Excellent call! There is a great locomotion to that groove if you accent it right. The kick drum following the right hand is key.

I look forward to trying your variation.

There's more rights in that pattern, so it's easier for me as a righty. RllRllRl is trouble to do fast if you're a righty.

obviously a lot of this depends on the style of music im playing. therefor what feels good at the time is a result of the music im playing it too. but overall my favorite fills are:

sextuplets between hands and feet

quintuplets between hands and feet

moeller technique and it various applications

quads

double stroke rolls

paradiddles

some of my favorite fills in songs would be the various fills in King Crimsons "one more red nightmare"

the fills at the end of Rushs "limelight"

7 and 13 stroke rolls. There are a lotta really cool stickings for this too. One of my favorites is RFFLRLR. I usually play the first right hand on my floor tom. then the bass double stroke, followed by the LRL on the snare to the crash on the final right. Play as Sixteenth note triplets, and string em together.,

Though I have not even come close to mastering septuplets as fills or as a groove I love the unbalanced feel they can create when played within a simple 4/4 groove. I like messing with the sticking e.g. Rllrrlr Lrrllrl and so on! I just started working on this stuff and can barely apply it but sooner or later the practice will pay off.

I also like plain old triplets with alternative sticking and voice patterns.

Hands:
rlrrLrrl right hand stays on the ride or the bell of the ride (play the first and third left hand on the hi hat and the middle left hand stroke on the snare)

Feet:
improving is alot of fun...find whatever bass pattern u think suits the groove best or u can use the one from my last post

Heres a fill i like to use using the paradiddle diddle

rlrrll rlrrll rlrl r

play the first stroke of each of those groupings on the crash and the rest on the snare.....then slide back into your groove.....

One I stumbled on accidently whilst goofin' around...
r r l r l b R (b=bass drum) Play it as 16th triplets, used as a fill. Try it first on beat 3 of a 4/4 measure, RH on bell, LH on snare. Last beat, RH comes off bell and nails a tom ON beat 4. Then you have a rest until beat 1 of the next measure, -OR- you'll be set up to play triplet 16ths again THROUGH beat 4 using r l b r l b.

Hope my explanation made sense!

Try moving around the set with this fill & see what it sounds like...

As far as favorite groove, Bernard Purdie, "Babylon Sisters" on Steely Dan's "Gaucho"...The way he works the soft, open HH into the groove... smooooth...

Learned this one online...it was in a youtube video sampler of a dvd a teacher was promoting...its a paradiddle inversion with the hands played with a half time feel

Hands: rllrlrrl Rllrlrrl...repeat this pattern with the hands playing the left hand on the hi hat and the right on the ride or its bell...only play the R shown in that sticking pattern on the snare

Bass drum: i like start by playing the bass drum on some of the right hand strokes but improving is alot of fun and u can come up with some really cool different feels with just adding or moving a bass drum stroke

A cool shuffle that can be used as a fill or a groove.

(16th note triplets)

RlrrlR LrllrL RlrrlR LrllrL

Keep your right hand on the hi hats and left on the snare, and play the kick on the 1 and 3 and where ever else you feel like.

Welcome aboard, Sleek!

I played this one for a little while... Tried opening the hats in different places, like the 4th stroke of beat 1 and beat 3; indicated in parenthesis:
Rlr(r)lR LrllrL Rlr(r)lR LrllrL Got it to groove fairly smooth.... good one!

ll r l r....great for playing in a funk groove as a fill...the first two left strokes are played as sixteenths and the others are played as eights....(or 32s and 16ths)...the first double and right hand hit are on the snare...then play the high tom with your left and your floor tom with your right...again i love this for my funkier grooves

reminds me of a ratamacue

which is a ruff followed by a fourstroke triplet roll.

its close to it....the ruff is replaced by a double and the last stroke is omitted...i came up with that one while playing around with ratamacues on my kit

This has got to be my favorite pattern. I actually made it up by mistake, about a year and a half ago i was doing paradiddles, switching the accents around and when I was going through the second cycle it got messed up and this came out, and I was like woah that was cool!

It's in trriplet form

RlrRlrLRlRll Right hits are on the bell of the ride left hand is on the snare
hight hat has quarter notes going, kick drum is intricate with the bell hits

My favorite groove is the 1/2 time shuffle or as it is more commonly know, the "Purdie Shuffle"

Beleive it or not my favorite fill is a flam, when done well it just kills me. I think Stewert Copland's flams are magic.

I ve been throwing this around alot lately- double bass falam combined with a tom to snare falam with 1 more snare at the end. Kinda like- bbtss repeated 2 or 4 times in rapid succession. Got it from the video here by Gavin Harrison on the Futile extended jam. Sound pretty cool!

Favorite groove;

right on hats
left on snare

RlRlRlrrLrll

i play this groove with alternating foot patterns ;-

1: Right Foot on the first R
2: Right Foot on the first 3 R's

Every l should be massively ghosted, and then the L should be a HUUUUGEE moeller WHACK rimshot :)

it took me quite a while to get this up to speed, (esp with the dynamics!) but if you play this up to speed with feel, it's AWESOME!!

enjoy :P
