That he could give you 2-3 lessons on ANYTHING, what would you ask?
I ask because this is exactly what my teacher told me this week. You see, in our high school band (and many others, I would assume), lessons are normally used for gearing up for solo competitions, tricky band parts, and getting ready for auditions (or something of the like). Right now, in between our solo & ensemble competition and marching season auditions, I have a few "open lessons".

Drum set is being taken care of in other future lessons, so this is pretty much purely percussion-based. This guy's just applied for his major, so he's obviously well-versed.

What should I go for?

Go over the solo pieces....if it's just percussional lessons, then that's what I would focus on.

Musicality. In other words phrasing, tempos, dynamics. To me, this the end goal of technique. How to get a great sound from your instrument and tunings. This just a diferent approach to music lessons instead of "this is the only way to hold sticks". Get his thoughts on these subjects. Keep learning !

my lessons are always open to me if I want to change the routine or learn something new.

Lately I asked to learn some shuffles like bonham and purdie 6/8 shuffle and we went over those for a month and Im blastin out shuffles all day.

Next we are going to start working on audition pieces and his college coursework from when he went to texas univ.(last night we went over some snare solos and such...) and also some afro-cuban / latin rhythms
