Hello fellow drummers,

My name is Victor, I've been playing for 12 years and a problem with timing has arised with me. I know I can play, I've played with other musician before its just that recently I've been trying out for bands and having trouble hearing riff bars and the transitions of the song. It might be because the amps aren't loud enough but even when I try to learn tracks of bands I like I have trouble. I'm to the point where I've thought about almost giving up. Anyway If anyone out there can help me I would greatly appreciate the help.

Is it timing you're having problems with...or knowing where you are in the tune? If it's timing get yourself a click track and practice. My meter was terrible when I started playing, but after using a click (live) for years, I can detect the slighteset fluctuations in tempo. You will learn to play on the beat, behind the beat, or in front of the beat. This is a drummers number one priority so I would start there.

Good luck.

How about the trouble of listening to riff bars? Sometimes its hard for me to hear them so I can know when the transitions are coming.

right yourself a chord chart so you can know when the changes are coming

I totally agree charts help but I'm also in a situation where I just have a track to go off of. Should I just train myself to just listen and focus or try other exercises as well?

i'd say listen to the track a lot so that it becomes second nature to you /
