All you need is a roto bass and you could fit your drumset in a briefcase...almost

Very cool. I've had 3 Roto-Tom kits over the years. Always the 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 sizes. Fun.

I use a 6", 8" and 10" in conjunction with my Yamaha Stage Customs. They sound great for accents, but you definately need to mic them because they have very little resonance and may be not loud enough, especially in a larger venue...

If you have any reservations, see Mike Mangini's solo on you tube from 1995. The rotos sound beautiful. They are sort of a one-trick pony but nevertheless very unique...
