View Full Version : What's the story behind your user name?

After seeing all of these crazy, funny and clever user names of you guys posting on drummerworld, I was curious to know the inspiration and/or story behind why you chose your user name. Mine is pretty boring. The "C" part is for my first name, Clint. The "drums" part is obvious and the "21" was my favorite number and my number that I chose for all of my uniforms when playing sports when I was younger. How about you? What's your story?

My name is Philip, I'm 6'6" and 105kg. So Big Phil would fit me well... but then a friend suggested Big Philly 'cause it looks a lot like Big Willy... Big Willy Style is a Will Smith album. And the user name originates from the time when I started doing a bit of graphical manipulation / designing as a hobby. So Big Philly Style would be the style of my work... haha

I use to photograph weddings, local sporting events, etc. Negative Attitude was the name of my company.
That's hilarious! What a clever name for a photo company, although I think it may have cost you some business. That reminds me of a guy I know who calls his audio production company "About Phase".
Anyway, I live in Kansas City, I'm a drummer, that's about all there is to it.
GRUNTERSDAD
02-18-2008, 03:01 AM
When my son, who is now 38, was about one year old he would go around making this noise with his mouth, that I called grunting. So he became Grunter. I called him this until he was about 18, when his girlfriend, now wife, wanted to know the story, and now I only call him that in private. Hence Grunters, Dad. or Gruntersdad. His son is now 2 1/2 and loves trucks and bulldozers etc, all called "diggers" So his Grandpa G, me, calls him Digger.
Edit: Maybe the ones with names they don't like, can talk the Mods into having, Name Amnesty Week. Where you can change your name with out punishment.

Boba Fett being my favorite character.

Michael...now that`s very complex and confusing stuff.
Haha, just kidding.
Mine is so simple as well:
Karl is my first name obviously and even more obvious: I`m a drummer.
By the way, I`m soooo happy I didn`t choose "Jazzer Karl" for example...personally I think the word "Jazzer" has an ironic or insulting undertone. The reason for this word-phobia is the music class teacher at our school. He always offends the Jazzband leader (who`s a real Jazz cat and lover) and me by using damn stereotypes about "Jazzers"...he`s a pianist coming more from the classical scene, especially church music. Of course it`s all fun but he caused this word phobia anyway. :-D

oikroitnik...
this is sound from underground hard dance dark trance, that i have often heard at free party/rave events out and about in east anglia (UK). I am stirred every time I hear it like a call to arms or gathering of the clan.
I think it is HH-SN-HH that electronically altered, possibly even inverted/reversed.

milkbetweenorangejuice
02-19-2008, 02:05 AM
Well, I wanted to think of something that wasn't boring (i.e. putting a favourite drummer/band in my name) so I thought of a recent, trivial incident at church.
Stupid story follows:
I guy I know, Ronald, tastes the orange juice (as a table of refreshments was set up that particular Sunday), reads the label, and noticed that calcium has been added. He then remarks to me "Its milk between orange juice." Firstly, I'd never heard it put quite that way before (and by that I mean, most people would have said something like, "Its a mix of milk and orange juice"), and secondly, his logic was fallacious. Milk isn't the only thing on planet earth with calcium. I thought those factors combined for a decently funny little saying.
SLEEPY BRiGHT EYEZ
02-19-2008, 02:13 AM
I've stuck with this nick for many years. It started as a game moniker then became the name I released my solo music under (long before I ever heard of that Bright Eyes guy which is so annoying). It basically refers to a time in my life when I would hardly get any sleep, and was always walking around like a zombie. heh I'm still a bit of an insomniac these days, but not like I was back then.

Gene Pitney was one of my favorite singers from the 50's/60's era. "Looking through the eyes of love" was such a great song and the voice....well...for those of you who know who Gene Pitney is, I needn't say anymore. Yea, I've done a few gigs downtown. The bar scene mostly. And YES...Secrets is still there, aka...Jamaica USA!! The Purple Moose is still thriving on the boardwalk, though I can remember back in the 80s' when it was REALLY popular, and you couldn't even get in the place.
The Bull On The Beach has moved to West O.C. and up to 94th St. And Phillips' is still in their main building on Coastal Highway.

well... there was a man and a woman, deeply in love. it was back in the 80's, when the hair were long on the back, and short over the forehead...
they met, they hung around a bit, then they decided to get together.
one day, a wonderful thing happened, the woman became pregnant, thanks to the man.
during the next 9 months of ups, and downs, they managed to find a name for the small guy, that was on his way out.
the man wanted the guy to be known as Iwo, but the mother wasn't so sure about it. so they've reached a compromise, results of which can be seen today. this compromise was a name - Kacper (very original at that time).
the man went to 'register' the small guy that was on his way out, as Kacper, but he found it pretty cool, to give him also the second name, so then the guy became known as Kacper Iwo...
Kacper Iwo, written together, gives kacperiwo, but the english pronounciation of the second part is wrong, so the guy came up with changing the double-u, into vee...
that guy is me, if someone couldn't catch up :P

I came up with "burn the hero" when I was thinking about how it seems that all the good people in the world are the ones who are persecuted for their way of thinking, while the ignorant and mundane are praised. Heroes perish and fools prosper.

I've noticed that too. Evil people usually live long, fruitful, productive lives. There needs to be many more good ones to replace themselves.
Tutin
02-27-2008, 03:40 PM
Tutin is a nickname I've had since I was like four or five years old. My full name is "John Donald Alexander McLellan", but somebody I knew had an older sister who's boyfriend was called "John Tutin" who he knew as Tutin. He decided it would just be easier to call me Tutin.
Anyway, that name's stuck and I use it for just about everything now and I kind of like it.

One of my dear beloved hobbies is watches. I am a collector with about 17 pieces now. They range in value from $25 Swatch to a real deal Rolex. Nearly all professionally photographed watches have the hands set to 10:10 or Ten Past Ten. The reason is asthetics: usually leaving no details obscured, especially the make. My avatar, by the way, is a 50th Anniversary Edition Rolex Submariner. Drums and watches, two of my great loves.

cdrums21,
Thinking out of the box I see. What a great question. The little things make all the difference. I really enjoy reading and thinking about drums and many of my "friends" on DW have influenced how I feel about one of my true loves....anyway. Slingerland755, I was fortunate enough to work out a deal with my first drum idol, Barry (BB Queen) Borden (the drummer for Mother's Finest, Choice, Illusion, Molly Hatchet, and the Marshall Tucker Band). We worked out a trade back in 1985 that included my 1979 Celica Supra for "Fred Red" (his 1978 candy apple red 9 piece Slingerland set). I watched BB and Mother's Finest open up for Aerosmith back in 1979 at the Omni in Atlanta, and they blew them off the stage. Truly the definig moment when I lknew drums were for me. Funk rock at its finest. Steven Tyler and the boys were no match for the energy MF displayed that night. BB gave me $500.00 and piece of crap 1978(?)MGB and Fred Red. A far as I'm concerned, he could have given me a terd and the drums. My drums will always be classice to me. The 755 is just a baseball thing (Hammerin' Hank, homeruns and Atlanta). Although, I wish I would have made it Slingerland285, because 285 was my band's name for 13 years. OK that's enough.

Almuric

Almuric is the name of the planet an heroic character gets transprted to in a cool old Si-Fi book "Iron Hand", written by Robert E. Howard, the creator of "Conan the Barbarian". The character's name is Esau Cairn but who can pronounce that? Iron hand is too Kung Foo-y, but "Conan the librarian" would have been funny.

JimFiore
04-01-2008, 10:30 PM
I got it from my parents. In Italian, "Fiore" means flower. "Jim" is short for "James" which is a variant of "Jacob" which means "the supplanter". So, I guess that means that I'm the guy who supplants flowers. Or maybe I'm a flower that supplants other flowers. Or maybe my parents just thought it sounded better than "Zeke Fiore". I dunno. I've been using it for almost 50 years. Works well enough.

PQleyR
04-06-2008, 01:22 AM
Years ago I was trying to think of a username for online gaming and other internet-type things that was concise, memorable, unique, and made a statement about me as a person. And also didn't have any numbers in it.
After a lot of thinking, I somehow came up with this one.
You say the letter names of the capital letters, and pronounce the lower case letters as one bit of the word:
Pee Que Ley R = peculiar. It used to be PQleeR, which is more accurate from a pronounciation point of view, but looks a little weird, so I added in the Y to form the name I eventually used. I even had an accent over the E at one point (PQléyR), but that was too complicated.
As far as I know, I'm the only person in the world using this name. A google search returns only my forum posts, youtube channel etc.
If you want to see what's so peculiar about me, I suggest you have a look at this (http://www.myspace.com/beanandamoo).

Polymetrix1618
04-14-2008, 02:13 AM
Karl
I get that from classical music snobs all the time. They don't like any genre except classical... And they hate jazz more than rock! I've never been called a jazzer because I'm as good at jazz as I am at Quantum Physics, but being called a rocker is pretty annoying too. What's a musicist slur for classical musicians? : )
Polymetrix1618

I'm a Star Wars freak, my interest goes well beyond the movies; like games, tv shows, and so many many books. I have loved Star Wars ever since I can remember.
Boba Fett being my favorite character.
When I started college in 2001 my class year was 2005 so I started making usernames for all kinds of things and I liked Fett2oo5 the best.
Ha! My Dad used to be friends with the guy who played Boba Fett, His name is Jeremy Bulloch (not 100% i spelt it right). He was also in a couple of Bond films back in the 70s/80s.
They used to go sea fishing together, but lost touch and I don't think my Dad has seen him in quite a while.
Oh yeah. And Big Chris? Well I'm 6'6" and about 300lbs.....So it's kinda fitting.

rogue_drummer
12-17-2008, 01:11 AM
My wife, now my EX WIFE, once called me a "self-absorbed deviant rogue" during one of our many, many arguments, which for the most part, she started. When we were dating and engaged, she loved my "deviant rogue" and outlaw persona. I was never arrested, but did tend to break a few laws here and there on occasion. Mainly racing, speeding and breaking and entering - not to steal, but for the "right" reasons. And I used to pull a lot of practical jokes. Not to hurt, but simply to amuse.
She's a school teacher and taught english as one of her subjects. Yes, she has a huge vocabulary, which is why she came up with the above insult. So I used the "Rogue Joker" handle on Xanga or My Space, as a taunt to the bitch - --- or rather my ex. And since I've joined DrummerWorld I thought I'd use the "Rogue" prefex again in my Rogue_Drummer handle. But now someone thought it'd be cute to steal my Rogue Joker handle and use it on another sight. That was my handle...my original handle that some unimaginative kid stole. Anyway, I'm rambling.....
I wish it was more interesting than that....

My name was invented out of necessity. Out of PTBD (Post Traumatic Boredom Disorder) I started surfing the web. I saw a thread about UNIX stave drums and decided to participate.
Trick drums offered me "artist pricing" so I thought of a name that could fit on a vanity driving plate. "Trkdrmr*" is liscence plate for "Trick Drummer". It's also easier to put on a liscence plate than "GeeZambizzihasacoolunixstavekit" ;)

Norheim means "north home."

Us cymbalphiles could all be rightfully titled this. I mean how many drum guys carry hand-held scales in their pockets to the music stores or analyze Tony Williams' or Elvin Jones' snare from every aspect possible? We are the definition of obsessive fanaticism.
As to the classic, cult movie from the 1960's, I absolutely laugh until I am breathless at it every time I see it. I have witnessed two times in my life where the whole world has been gripped in total distrust and paranoia. Dr Strangelove points out the whole ridiculousness of this absurd behavior.

So now it's SickRick which is StickTrick without "T"s. The bad side about this is that everybody calls me Rick now... Didn't think that one through... :)

The Colonel
07-17-2009, 11:57 PM
I showed up at this late-night [jazz] jam session in NYC and it was great. Great players, great atmosphere, and people were there just to listen to the music and everything - I ended up playing basically the whole night because I was the "only" drummer after the house guy got done (one other dude got on the drums, and it was apparent to everyone that we needed to get him off the drums...)
I show up the next week, and this oooooooold black dude (great upright bassist) immediately says "Aaahh! The Colonel's back!" and it's been a nickname of mine since then.
That and I used it when I came back on from getting banned cuz "Erik Lund" seemed a little too sexy/pornographic for a family website.

2 years ago i was walking down to the supermarket to get some coke, and suddenly a naked guy jumped off the roof of a house to my left and started to run down the street, then ran into the supermarket and started humping the cashiers and security guards and screamed "dynamokiev" repeatedly, while an old woman hit him with a broom on the head.
also...
its the name of my band Dynamo Kiev
LOL! C'mon, you're kidding, right? That is so off the wall :)
As for my name, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollyanna#Influence
DrummerBoy95
07-20-2009, 11:59 AM
well mine is pretty straight forward aswell. drummerboy is the nickname i got when my uncle (he plays bass) took me to clubs where the musicians who didnt kno my name just called me drummerboy or drummerkid (i liked drummerboy more).the 'boy' is because at that time i was what 10 or 11, so compared to the other guys who played there i was pretty young i guess lol. finally the '95' is because im born in the year 1995, so im 14.
cheers

I am and always have been a computer nerd... I have always used a computer so waaaaaaaayyyyyyyy back when i was kid... long before the internet became anything like it is today... we used to have BBSes...(bulletin board systems) that were locally run by other computer nerds with a pc in their house that people would connect to via a dial-up modem... and post on forums and play online games and share files (most of the same stuff we do now on the internet but on a much smaller scale)
anyway... back then in the year 1992-93(?)... i came up with this name and I have used it ever since.
I'm new here btw... but i think i might actually stick around (no pun intended) because I like the topic..

keep it simple
09-18-2009, 11:26 AM
It's been my drumming mantra ever since I was tutored in classical percussion (timpani, tubular bells) from the age of 10. My tutor (a beautiful woman in her 70's, 1st percussionist, Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra) gave me this one piece of advise when she gave me my last lesson & brought a kit along for the very first time. I was 15. She blew me away with her power & presence on the kit. A frail elderly woman playing Bonham riffs with such power & authority. Her last statement to me was "and remember, always keep it simple".
I've played by that mantra ever since as I believe the simple approach is almost always best for the song.

Read several of your posts. Your user name is undoubtedly your mantra, sir. Great advice....love how you've worked a 'space' ref into your sig too!!
As for mine, pretty simple really. Always loved the verse

I live for my dreams and a pocket full of gold
from Led Zepp's Over the Hills and Far Away. Dunno why I added the -'s tho....just makes for more to think about when logging in!! FWIW, Deathmetalconga is most definitely the coolest name here, I'd be shattered if that one was changed.

You should be able to see your own pic (called an "avatar"). I don't see it either, so maybe you didn't set it up correctly?

I have been looking around and trying to figure out how to do. I was hoping I could use a pic I all ready downloaded but it looks like I need to download a pic specifically for my avatar. I will try and we shall see if it works.

First, make an avatar: Take any picture, crop and size it to 100 x 100 pixels maximum. Save it as a jpeg or png file onto your desktop.
Now go the the User CP (control panel). The link is near the top left of this page, under the thread name. Then click Edit Profile Picture. Now you can use the Choose File button to locate the pic on your desktop to upload. That's it!
Simple, Abel is my middle name.

10-29-2009, 07:48 AM
My username is an almagamation of "Bass Drum" and "Devil Driver" (groove metal band that I was thinking of when thinking about for inspiration for what the username should be).
Also I'm starting to train a quite a bit on double-kick speed and control, and the bass drum in a drumset can really drive a groove.
You can call me "BD"

A friend of mine called me goat duck (my last name is goetgeluck pronounced goodluck) and he started saying words that he thought my last name looked like. Im not sure how he got that from my last name but he did. I thought it was kinda funny so I chose it as a username.
CaptainSticks
10-30-2009, 03:05 AM
Well, back in 6th grade, since my friend played guitar, I played drums, and some other guys who played "rock" instruments in the school, the new band teacher decided to create an after school rock program. well one day during that, it was just me and 2 of the usual 8 there and we were kinda jittery and went off task in between songs. So the band teacher Called me captain sticks, being a drummer, my friend Captain Noodles, and The other guy noodle-sticks(he played drums and guitar).
-hope that is not ambiguous
When I was in my teens I worked as a laborer on construction sites one summer. Most of my fellow workers were much older than I and of Afro-american decent, everyone on the job had a nick name, given by the boss man. Mine was to be, Rockin Big Daddy or RBD. When some of my school mates heard the tag, they couldn't let it go. So here I am.

Bluecoyote
10-30-2009, 06:54 PM
After I retired, completing 30 years as a museum curator, I started a heritage conservation consulting business. I was looking for a business name and one winter morning I was looking out my kitchen window into pasture below my house. In the middle of the pasture was a coyote rustling up a meal by digging in the snow. The cold morning light, as it was racking across the snow, threw a blue light on the animal. It actually looked blue in color. Suddenly I had my business name and my user name for the forum that I partipate in. Thus I have been the bluecoyote ever since. Oddly enough blue is my favorite color so I was an easy fit.
When I was a kid, my friends called me "Cornhole" because of my first name, but I did not think that that was suitable for a user name!
joeysnare
10-31-2009, 05:54 AM
well my story sounds lame compared to others, but anywho bought a joey jordison sig snare cause i liked the sound, not a big fan of slipknot though. i had to start new accounts on various web sites and all the names i picked were taken, my recent purchase came to mind and ive never had it rejected since, never have i found a site where the name "joeysnare" was taken. I do kinda regret that it represents one of my possesions but doesnt really say anything about me.
My name is Eric. Good stuff, huh?
I would be worried about creating a user name after a band I was currently in, for the same reason I wouldn't write a love song named after a current girlfriend-it's just bad luck.

when i started to look for other people to learn to play with they were surprised when they turned up to find an old woman. I did not want to put people off by starting email and ads with---"hi I am a 60 year old woman" thought most people would not read much furthur. so I decided to get the point over in my user name on musicians websites. And now I have just got used to it. Mind you some people must not look at user names or email addresses because people still got a shock.
My current band do not mind playing with a wrinkly, they are in their 20's and a good bunch of lads. Dont do their image much harm, people do not normally notice who is behind the drums. Often after a gig whilst mingling people are realy surprised when I say I am the drummer, they had not even noticed it was a woman, never mind an older one.

thtst, I was wondering about your username. Thought it might have been an acronym.
It is, and now that i have announced what it stands for on the site www.THTST.com here it goes:
There was a contest to guess the album's title and to date no one was able to guess correctly. Instead of just coming out and saying what the THTST means, please listen to Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door song titled "All My Love". Pay special attention to the lyrics after the solo break.
(for DW'ers i'll spell it out)
Yours is 'the cloth', mine is...
The Hand(s) That Sew Time
Album sales have been quite good btw. (knocking wood......... blocks :) ) Feedback from listeners is very positive, with a divergence of those who want me to do another album with nothing but 'all-out' drumming and those who want me to do more etherial mellow melodic/tonal/textural 'aural' sounds. Just submitted the album to the Percussive Arts Society a few days back as well to get their feedback.

Uhh...you're kidding, right?
