I'm brand new to drumming and just got my first set. Are there any issues or disadvantages to setting up on carpet. I ask because it looks like that's where they might have to be for now.

The drum kit and its hardware will leave some markings and dirt, so it it's a fine carpet, you should place an expendable rug on top of it.

No, it shouldn't be an issue. On the contrary, the carpet's sound muffling qualities might be quite desirable.

The rug will stop the bass drum from sliding forward also.

Depends on the situation, a kit on a nice heavy rug on hardwood will really help out with acoustics or really any surface for that matter.
