View Full Version : I've narrowed it down (somewhat)

So, I'm now down to:

A Yamaha Oak Custom (red oak laquer)
22x18
10x8
12x9
16x16
14x5.5
For $1635

A Unix Birch kit (in Gold sparkle to black satin oil with black hardware)
22x18
8x8
10x8
12x10
16x16
For $1810

A Tama Starclassic Performer (red sparkle fade to black)
22x18
10x8
12x9
16x16
14x6
For $1250

Tama Starclassic B/B (red sparkle fade to black)
22x18
10x8
12x9
16x14
14x6
for $1600

Gretsch Renown Maple (cherry burst)
22x18
8x7
10x8
12x9
14x14
For $1300

Pearl Masters MCX (black stain)
22x18
10x8
12x9
16x16
For $1500

A Mapex Pro-M (red fade to black)
22x18
8x8
10x8
12x9
16x16
For around $1500 (I don't remember)
So, that's what i've narrowed it down to. I love the sound of all these kits, but I've never heard a Unix kit. I'm kind of leaning toward Unix, because he seems really good, and I get everything I want. I like the sound of both maple and birch, too.

Deffinatly go w/ unix, I was about to ask Frank what he would charge for a bop set, 18X14 12X8 14X14 with a natural to honey amber fade.

Woah people don't automatically jump the unix train.

Stave is a very different type of drum, it may or may not be to his liking.

Judging by his choices, that probably won't matter to him. His choices are all over the place when it come to wood. Maple, Birch, Oak... As it seems like he'd like and appreciate a variety of different things, Unix would give him the best bang for the buck in a unique and custom product.

Unix hands down. I would take a stave kit over any of the other kits.

I'm going to say Unix. For one, he's custom. Two, it's in your own custom color with your hardware (you told me all about this). Three, he makes amazing drums.

Tamascb10
02-09-2008, 08:28 PM
Well, will the Unix kit sound better than lets say a Starclassic Performer? Because the only "main" differance is the fact it's a stave kit, which I don't think should change the sound much.

Same with the Renown and MCX, mainly not much differance exept shell disign (silver sealer vs whatever Pearl's was).

The B/B sounded very good, too. The B/B has tone, punch, attack, warmth, a nice ring, and a good balance of everything you want in a drum set.

The Oak Custom was nice. I loved the grain on it. The bass was amazing. But the toms didn't sound any better than an MCX/Renown/ B/B.

I've never played a Mapex kit, though.

I'd say 99% of us haven't. Because he's custom, you either start with a snare or a full kit.

Those of us who really like Unix do so because of what we know of his construction and how staves sound.

Yeah, I'm still leaning towards that kit. It's in my budget, and he makes some amazing stuff. Sure its $210 more than the starclassic B/B, but what differance is that going to make?

I have never tried stave drums, so I'm really unsure as to the advantages to the Unix drums.
Among the big name drums, I would lean towards the Starclassic performer (My dad and I each have one and we love them). I am a big birch fan because I find it very versitle and it has a beautiful sound when it comes to high energy music (which is what I seem to be playing a lot lately). They project a little better than maple due to the balance of the tone being a little higher.

Tamascb10

That's true. I like the punch and attack of birch. Makes wonderful, powerful bass drums.

Well, the different shell construction will change the sound much more than the difference timber makes between any of the ply kits you mentioned. You think about the difference in sound between a 3 ply ludwig and a Sonor Phonic. HUGE difference sonically, in attack, warmth, timbre, volume, etc. Stave drums are quite different when compared to ply drums; they are very 'full' sounding, fat, and 'in your face' (I'm not too good at sound descriptions...). Try myspace.com/metrodrums and listen to the soundfiles there. The kit is a Rose Gum stave kit, I think in 22x18, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 14x6.5 and 10x6 sizes with coated G2s, and the recording hasn't been Eq'd, although I think it might have a little compression.
For the record, I'd have Frank make you a kit. I haven't seen anything that looks like it could better a Unix kit, and that's not taking prices into account.

Well, I found a slight problem with the Unix kit. Well, I "prefer" maple over birch, but do to price, I have to settle for birch. That's my problem, It's better to get what you what until you can afford a kit you want (Unix bubinga kit).

So, I've been looking at kits that will last as long as I need them to (Till I can afford a Unix bubinga kit, which will be a while).

Here is a few kits I've been looking at:

http://www.massmusic.net/shop/?shop=1&cart=8004950&cat=251&

If that's the case, don't spend so much. You can get cheaper kits of very good quality if it's just meant to be a temporary thing. Save some $$$ and you'll be closer to the bubinga stave kit already. Also, ask how much it costs...

Cheap kits of good quality are the Tama Superstar, Sonor Force 3007 (if you're into maple) and Mapex M-birch.

Actually, I was thinking to get a nice (but not overly nice) kit, then resell it. Like a Pearl Masters MCX (I found a good used one) the Gretsch Renown (It would be really hard to re-sell a kit like that though) or maybe another kit. But so far, I really really REALLY LOVE the Mapex Saturn Special addition 7 piece. I've played a 5 piece saturn and it was amazing, same with the Tama B/B!

Anyway, I that's why I was looking at used/cheaper kits, But I don't really want to wait and buy the Unix kit. Because that'll take forever.

Right now I have a Starclassic Bubinga. People are going to ask "why are you looking at new kits if you got something like that?!?!" But the fact is, my parent baught it for me. And they said that if I don't practice/take care of it They'll take iut away from me. And I really didn't listen, and now It's my dad's kit. It may sound like I don't deserve a new kit some may say, but between everything going on I had no time. Plus my band broke up, which led to no more band practice. Wow that was alot to say, but yeah.

this is what i think you should do(or what i would do). dont buy a kit now. cause the Unix kit is what..2 grand?. so if you go buy the other kit as a "temperary" kit, you more then likely you wont be able to sell it for what you paid. then that is that much more money you dont have to go for the Unix kit(or for any other kit)and from those links, those sets were $1200 or so. so wait a few months, save up another $800+ and get your Unix kit.

btw. shame on you for not practicing on your Tama..haha. cause that kit is really amazing sounding! and do you still have access to it? if so, show him that you do deserve it by practicing alot..etc..

Take the saturn over the Unix kit? Well, it's like $500 more than the Unix kit (the birch one on my list, not the bubinga one). And it's maple/walnut.

But maple, then birch is possible, Pearl Masterworks =D

no. if you were going to buy the Mapex for a temperary kit for 2 grand. why not just go ahead and buy the Unix set. and what i meant by the maple then birch is, a stave is constructed of alot of pieces of wood. haha but you got say(just a estimate) 1, 2" wide maple, then 1, 2" wide birch, then 1, 2" wide maple, then 1, 2" wide birch. and so on.

Ok couple things here:

Unix Birch drum or Maple are the same price.
Bubinga with a satin finish would be almost the same price.

And third, you may not like this but, I think you better go with Tama or pearl. You see in yours search you compared many plys shell company with 1 stave shell company. If you would have look over many stave company it would be differents. If you choose a stave kit, it's because of the sound you searching for... if it's only for a matter of look, I can achived the same look with plys shell and it will cost less.

Just to let you know I also do ply shells kit too.
Don't choose stave because people tell you to do so, but because that is what you want. Be your own judge. Stave are different and may not fit everyone.

I've been looking into your kits because your kits are pieces of art, they are goergous. Even when you havent painted them yet, you can't even see the staves!
