View Full Version : Sensitone or Pork Pie 14 X 6.5 Brass?

Last night we (my son and I) played a number of snares and liked the pearl sensitone and pork pie both in brass both in a 14X6.5. The only other snare that sounded nice but not as good as the brass shells was the Chad smith.
Anyone play both and see a clear winner?
What does one offer that the other does not?
What will hold its value better in case he changes his mind down the line (I am expecting this).
Anything else in that price range that that would be a “must play” before pulling the trigger on one of these?
Any help is much appreciated.

Oddly enough a few months ago I was contemplating both snares as well and eventually I went with the Pork Pie. Upon removal of the heads I found the seams along the bearing edge on both top and bottom to be less than satisfactory which was a shame because the drum sounded great. I ended up returning it and getting the Sensitone and I'm very happy with it.
My advice? Get the one that costs less.

I also use a brass sensitone i've never played the pork-pie snare but I love my sensitone tunes easy and sounds great and is very sensitive LOL

I got all 3 snares home last night. We brought home the Chad Smith for comparison as well.
He has decided on the Brass Pearl Sensitone 14 x 6.5. It’s just a little warmer but still a great pop to it. They are both about 300 here in Canada.
He did have a hard time saying no to the CS though. He loves the “feel” of that drum over both the deeper brass shells.
I preferred the CS as it is 225 here. :-)
Thanks for your help!
Any head recommendations for that brass sensitone?
It sounds quite nice with the stock ambassador but I suspect he will blow through that quickly.

All I used is a coated ambassador once i used a Remo Renaissance and it was a little dryer than the ambassador sounded real good the ambassador was a little more durible through.

I replaced the Coated Ambassador with an Evans Power Center Reverse Dot and found it better. Then I accidentally bought a Coated Emperor CS (I wanted the Ambassador CS) and after a bit of tweaking its sounds pretty good. I also swapped the snare strands with some Puresound Blasters and that made the biggest difference of all.
Good luck!
