Im using a Pearl Piccollo Maple 13x3 as my main snare but want to add another brass snare for contrast in both fills and rythems. I've tried putting it to the left of the hi-hat but doesnt flow easily for fills and tried in-between my hi-hat and small tom but that isnt too good as well as its where i like to place my percussion such as block and tamberien etc.

Anyone else over-come this problem or got an idea to help me?

Thanks,

Well, I've got mine racked to the side of the toms not between like Mike Mangini has his. The way it works currently is that I can partition the kit, with the floor tom and ride on the right with the piccolo and the pedal mounted percussion.

So between your middle and floor tom? But do you play the 2nd snare opened handed?

Yeah, sorry for not being more precise. It's between the middle and floor tom. And yes, I play it open handed, it's a natural way (for me at least) of getting comfortable with open handed playing.

I used a side snare in a recent project (http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35018) of mine. It takes some practicing to make the movements between the snare and the rest of the kit comfortable, quick and precise, but it can be achieved.

Here's how I set mine up, and Wave is right on target.. it's awkward as anything at first, then becomes very natural...

Dunno if this helps, but here's 3 views of my kit with the 2nd snare:

And no, I do not have any reasonable explanation for why I have such a dopey look on my face in the 2nd pic. ;->

Here is how i have mine set up. Pretty much the basic way. I only use it for hip hop and basically do double strokes with just the right hand for fills.

i find that tilting the snare slighty twoards me almost like an old school marching snare helps with the flow a little bit. i also elevate it a little higher then the other snaredrum so i can still hit rimshots with it tilted like that

It's about getting used to the movements around the kit. You're used to playing on the floor tom on your right. It's the same with the snare.
