He is one of my favorite fusion/jazzy/Latin drummers around. His music with his band (Dharma Allstars) is excellent, I just can't get enough!! I did his website (johnfav.com and be warned Mozilla users, your version is not done yet, lol) and talked to him on the phone and he is very relaxed person to talk to and is just great in general. Here is his bio [hint hint Bernhard, ; ) ].

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of todays top players, New York-based John Favicchia has performed and/or recorded with such greats as Steve Khan, Tony Levin, Chieli Minucci, Lonnie Plaxico, John Benitez, Harvie Swartz, Larry Coryell, Dean Brown,Chris Geith and Bob Malach. His band Dharma All Stars blends various styles into a powerful blast of fusion that spans the extremes of the dynamic range, Favicchia has been busy touring and recording as well as stepping up to the plate with his own solo releases. His debut, World Time, earned rave reviews and was a Top 10 Critics Pick of the Year in Jazziz Magazine. The latest, Dharma, offers an intriguing mix of melody, eclecticism, and tight ensemble playing with the likes of all-star guests including Khan, Brown, Swartz, Dave Mann, and Chieli Minucci. Favicchia is all about the mindful side of playing drums of making music from the mind, for the mind. Definitely, he says, Its all about the soul and the mind, but its very visceral as well. Im caressing the sounds out of my cymbals in one bar, but when the music takes off and I start to wail, I take no prisoners.
Increasingly in demand for drum clinics and festivals, John has recently played such major events as:

Cape Brenton Drum Fest Canada
Denver Music Institute Denver ,CO
Drummers Collective NYC
Quebec City Music, Canada
Just Drums, Toronto Canada
Slam Jam 05 New Jersey
East Coast Guitar Center Tour
Sam Ash Music US Tour
Long Island Drum Center

Said Mike Lomonaco, Just Drums, Toronto: John Favicchia is great. Hes a dynamic, very involved player who blew us all away with his great playing and personality. When he arrived to play his clinic not everyone knew who he was. He soon changed that! John Endorses: Yamaha Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, Remo drum heads. L.P. Percussion, Hansenfutz practice pedals, Real Feel Pads, DrumFun and Samson Mics.

I met John from being in the same "east coast Dom circle", he's a terrific drummer - we are friends, and roomed together and hang out at NAMM/PASIC.

In fact, Bernard - I introduced you to John at the Marriot! Then we saw you in the elevator!

John has played with many great artists, and recorded last year (or 2006) with Tony Levin (Gabriel bassist)

He does great Latin Jazz drumming on his CDs

He is actually right now in California doing a store clinic series

Had the great pleasure to catch John Favicchia.

The thing that struck me that was very very lovely was John said, "I'm gonna sit down and practice for you guys." He proceeded to play along with these great tracks. Styles of latin, jazz, fusion, funk. 5 or 6 tracks atleast.

I didnt know this at the time but John later told me that he wrote these. I was extremely impressed with his writing abilities. His compositions were really fantastic. He reminded me a bit of a modern day Lenny White. Certain tinge to what he did.

Some really great odd-times, he writes phenomenal odd-times. Phenomenal tutti-style playing. There was one composition (dont know which one), where John did this amazing tutti thing, and the thing that blew me away was he played to it so perfectly. I was flawed by the perfect execution of his ability to play along with the track.

He also too did some soloing, which blew me away. He's an amazing soloist. Very very very loose. (Got me a little jealous haha). After the performance, John asked the audience about some of their favorite drummers. I thought that was really cool.

There was a sheet that he had that had very very practical patterns, and I enjoyed the way he spoke about the sheet. (Though I have trouble viewing it, sorry). I'm sorry I didnt get a chance to speak with him about his studies with Al Miller, our common bond. He conducted a short question and answer and it was very cool.

John emphasized practicing on a practice pad. I like that a lot. I thought this was really a great thing. He said he been through something like 20 practice pads, pretty wild. John was hanging at the end talking to everybody, which was reall cool. He talked of the structure and basis of the clave beat and how it intertwined in to his rhythms, very cool. John emphasized playing to music. For me personally, this is something I am starting to get back too, so I'm really glad he emphasized that. So important.

Definite guy to look out for when he's in your town - you really walk away learning a lot.

Special special special thanks to Lou Gervey for a wonderful drum event!

thanks John,

You know, when I first saw your grid, it took me back to HS trig and combinations. So the total number of combinations possible from the grid in 4/4 time would be 2 to the 16th power , if I am correct, 0's and I's, if each 16th note is on or off. If you take just the rhythmic ideas created by the potential of the grid, you can multiple that by accented v unaccented notes and the number of drums you have, which should begin to give you a good idea of the number of possibilities the grid creates.

2 to the 16th power X ( 2 ) X the number of drums you have to that power. (if you have 6 drums it is 6 to the 6th power, add cymbals the number could easily be 15-20.)

then on to thirty second notes . :)

and then onto poly-rhythm . . .

The drums are so easy to play. Once you get four part independence, you add the musicality of dynamics and the drums or cymbals you are on and you see quickly that it goes far beyond your four limbs and the potential becomes quite staggering.

What did you think/

Thanks!!! Yeah- the feel thing/behind the beat thing is important for the groove. For me it is about just trying to improvise and let things happen. Not to worry about making eveything perfect. All though I do like to play things right one. So I guess it is a combo of things-Relax-let if flow and some concentration....

Thanks for cheching them out. I have alot more to post. So check back!!

I actually enjoyed the first set as well. I like that soft dinner jazz. There was one point where you guys just got into such a great groove and you guys did some covers that were familiar and fun. Second set was great. Nice and hot. I could see how it would be a rough room but it's a cozy place and refreshing that the owner has the ingenuity to do events like this. He's a big Dharma All-Stars fan , huh? The food smelt really great, and though I only sat at the bar. I left with a big appetite. I did not want to eat that late though. Next time I'll try the baked ziti.

John and the band don't get to play that much because they are all so busy. But when they get together it is a wonderful musical experience. They usually play in NYC. But I got a chance to see them nearer to my home in a dinner club in Huntington, right near the Long Island Sound. They had to be a little more subdued than usual, esp for the first set. They are all primo musicians; and I think they really worked the room well. John demonstrated that you can still play the heck out of a drum kit without being too loud.

HI Ken-

Thanks again for coming to that gig. Yes it was a fun gig but I agree with you. We really had to tone it down in there. But that is fine. The place was jammed and people were very close to the band. I know the people enjoyed the band and we had a great night playing. I think we played around a 6.5 out of 10. So hopefully you can come see us again when we can let it rip!!! LOL

Talk soon-

very nice playing, John!!

i wasn't sure if you know, but if you add "&fmt=18", without quotes, to the end of any YouTube link, it plays in much higher quality with stereo sound!

for instance, the last link you posted -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKrpN41cLAA

would become
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKrpN41cLAA&fmt=18

I checked out your elements and understand what they are, but am not sure how you suggest implimenting them. Any chance for a little clarity for some with dense skulls?

Elements is a way of connecting your thoughts with Technique. So I take the student through around 25 ways on each of the Elements. The 2nd example on the sheet that is posted here is playing low stroke 16th notes and then accenting each element as a full stroke. Once this feels locked in then move it onto the drums and start to voice the accents around the kit.

There is many ways of doing all these exercises. I hope with this small explaination it will help you to get started...

'1 bar fill with each element voiced around the drum set'

Thanks for the reply John.

Question 1... is the 'fill' composed of 16ths with the elements then accented? That's how I tried them and doing it that way will help me.

2. Because the elements use both r and l hands, why is there the left hand exercise (do you mean to reverse the 1 to the left hand instead of rt?)

3. The bd exercise I don't get. Are we playing the elements with the bd? If so, what about the hands?

Thanks John, I'm gong to work these over as I see them until you clarify my confusion.

GOT IT! duh
I just spent over an hour on the elements and they are really fun. Thanks for posting these. I'll work em' as part of my daily practice from now on. Ths is what I needed to help tighten up the e + a accents, and I didn't have an exercise source. Now I'll take them from the pad to the drums. Very cool! I'm still confused on the bd exercise though.

The 1st of many BD exercises with the elements is simple. Set up a groove and play each element on the BD. For example 1/8 note Ride, 2+4 on SD, left foot HH 1/4 notes. Now play each element with the right foot on the BD!

Make sense??

intheruff
11-19-2008, 06:10 PM
'Make sense?? '

Yep! Yesterday I played 16ths on double pedals while accenting the elements. I can see that within a short time using the elements will improve greatly my bass speed and control, not to mention the hands. And, not only playing straight time with the hands as you suggest, but I imagine playing more complex rudiments around the set while playing the elements with the feet will also help with independant coordination. As basic as it is, of the zillions of exercizes and patterns I've read on the forum, this, for me, is by far the best. Thanks for the post.
