John Bonham - The Ocean (Ending)

Hi everyone, I have a small question on a part of a song that has led me to frustration :P.
I'm sure most of you have seen the super-fast strokes that John Bonham uses during the bluesy ending of The Ocean by Led Zeppelin. I don't have a clue about how the technique that he uses is called, but I think it are double strokes, but then ofcourse lightning fast.

Could anyone clarify this technique, or link a video or dvd that explains this?

There arn't really any doubles in the part you are talking about when you get right into the beat its just playing some regular time with the crash on 1 and 2 and then he goes off into straight triplets on the snare then its the snare crash snare crash then its triplets moved around the snare tom and bass drum. It does get a little complicated I hope I helped a little.

do what i do..

you have to take an aggressive approach to this song.

the tripplets he does(with bass) during the verses caught me off gaurd but the ending with the triplets i found quite easy


just listen to the song nonstop for an hour

go down to the kit and just wail away at it.


thats how i learned the drop roll. i listened to over the hills and far away for a whole hour.. you have to pick bonham apart bit by bit

I'm not really reffering to the triplets, because those are do-able. But I'm talking about only his right hand on his ride during the ending of the song, where the tempo suddenly gets layed up a notch.

If you are referring to the ending of the video posted on the Drummerworld website (are you?), Bonham is riding on the crash cymbal, or the "crash/ride" as they are sometimes called. His right hand is really doing nothing special (other than providing a great feel).
He is playing quarter notes mainly with his right hand and maybe an occasional improvised added 8th note to fill in space. However, these 8th notes are swung, as the the ending of the song switches from a straight feel to a swung triplet feel. Is this what you mean?
