Please Help,

I’m in the process of selling my 2003 5-piece Tama Starclassic performer (Birch) in Dark Cherry Fade. I’m looking to buy a high end kit and I need some opinions on what would be best for rock/metal playing. I narrowed it down a little but I still need some input. All I need is a shell pack because I already have DW 9000 hardware and a DW snare. Money isn’t an issue but I would like to keep it under $4,000. If anyone can lead me in the right direction with sizes or brands I would highly appreciate it. I know its based on opinion and personal taste but I would like someones input.

Hardware: Chrome
4-Piece: Shell Pack
Wood: Maple

Brands I considered:
1.) DW
2.) Tama Starclassic
3.) Truth
4.) OCDP (If all else fails)

Sizes I considered:
1.) 18"x22" Bass Drum
2.) 8"x10" Tom
3.) 9"x12" Tom
4.) 14"x16" Floor Tom

Thanks,
Dan

Good news! You already own a high end kit.

Maybe you don't like birch.

Why are you considering Starclassic if you already have a Starclassic Birch? Do you just not like the sound of Birch?

Honestly if under $4,000 was my budget, I'd contact our buddy Frank (Unix here on the forum) and have him build me a stave kit. The sizes you're looking for would probably run you either under $2,000 somewhere, or just a little bit over.

$4,000???

With that kind of budget why not enslave a crafter to make you drums whenever you want?
;-)
I'd try dw, they look pretty solid for rock. However, i've never used them in person so don't trust me.

I'ts not that they are bad sounding its just not the sound I'm looking for. When I bought the tama kit in 2003 I was 14. I didnt do my research and just ordered what looked cool to me. I had to pay for my mistakes and now after 5 yrs of playing I just need a new sound.

dang, you sure suffered from that kit at 14 man..lol i would have hated myself for that :p. just play'n. yes, i would check out Frank(Unix). and DW is a fine choice, but for what you get, they are overpriced. like Fourstringdrums said, you could get a full stave kit from Unix, and have a much better sound, for alot less than DW, or for that matter OCDP.(talk about over priced..lol) just my .02 cents!

Gretsch New Classics or Customs would be perfect in those sizes.

Really at that price the possiblities are unlimited!! Almost any kit can be used for metal or rock. For a true rock metal sound if you only intend to go 5 piece I'd probably go 12,14,16 on the toms, if it were me for that price I'd go 10,12,14,16. When I think of rock I think of usually a deeper tone that the 12,14,16 would give but you can add some really cool accents and flavor with a 10. Have you considered yamaha like the Maple custom absolutes?
