I used to use four or five all the time. Now ive down sized to only two. This allows me to have an easier set up but at times i wish I had more. So how many do you guys use?

Three crashes, two splashes, a china, ride, and hi-hats.

I've got 3, but they're all pretty close in size - 16, 17, and 18". i'd eventually like to add a 19" and perhaps a 12/14-incher, to give a little more variety...i don't think i need more than 4 crashes up at any given time, though. I'd just like more options.

i also have 3 splashes (6, 8, and 9"), and 3 custom chimes made from old cracked crashes.
my ride, china, and hi-hats round up the bunch.

I love having more crashes but it always seem like there is that one crash that just doesnt get used that often. I feel the same way about my china.

i used to play paiste dimensions in 17, 16,16,15. I currently play 20 and 18 medium 2oo2's. I am considering either buying another 20 medium (i love the sound of this cymbal) or getting 20 and 18 crashes. My dad thinks that the two 20s and 18s wont blend. Is he right? I think hes wrong these cymbals are from the same line.

You use all rides right? Are they all the same weight or different? and do you use one as your main ride or do you use all of them.

One of them is a 19" which is 1723g and the other is 20" which is 2097g. I had a 21" that I was using but I'm most likely selling it. My 19" is used more like a crash though I do ride it sometimes and my 20" is used as both my main ride and a secondary crash.

If we are talking in grams what is considered light medium and heavy?

Well both of the cymbals are considered light. My 19" is designated as Thin, and while my 20" doesn't have a designation it's still considered to be Thin. They're both fairly light, though I believe that in their respective series, they're actually heavier models that what you would find.

I was using 2 crashes, hats, and a ride up until last month...when my new goodies arrived.

My current setup:

14" A Custom Mastersound hats
22" K Constantinople Hi Bell Dry ride
18" K Custom Dark crash
16" A Custom Med. crash
16" K Custom Special Dry crash
10" K Custom Dark splash

I changed my setup tonight and put my 18" A Custom Med. crash aside...it's just too loud for recording.

BTW - I need a good, quick, trashy china that blends w/ this setup, if anyone has any recommendations....

You should sneak up behind the pianist when she's playing and play the loudest, fastest blastbeat you can manage!

Okay, maybe not, but that was the first thing I thought of when I saw that picture.

Right now, I only use one crash and one china, in addition to ride and hats, of course. I might get another crash (20") eventually.

Aside from HH and ride, each week I vary what I use depending on where I'm playing from two crashes to four crashes, two splashes, and a china... and occasionally a wayward microphone.
For the two setup:
16" Zildjian A Med. Thin
17" Zildjian A Med. Thin

For the whole shebang:
As above plus:
16" Zildjian A Custom crash
18" Zildjian A Med. crash
10" Zildjian A Splash
12" Zildjian A Custom Splash
18" Zildjian A China High

I used to use more, but have mellowed somewhat.. ;-)

Peace!

Right now i use 3 crashes-

16" Sabian HHX Evolution
16" Zildjian A Thin Crash - love that crash to death, wouldnt sell it for anything.
14" Sabian AAX Studio Crash.

All great cymbals. I would like to have one more crash added in there, but right now im not in a positions to but one.

I also have
14" Sabian B8 hi hats
22" Zidljian A Medium Ride
12" Wuhan China
10" Paiste pst splash (currently need to buy a stand for it so it isnt in use.)

Very comfortable cymbal setup for me.

Most of the time I only use my 16" AAXplosion and 16" AAX Stage crash. When I use my big setup I would add an 18" AA medium thin crash. I never use more than three, I have no use in having so many crashes.

I like to have two, my setup has been:
1 set of hats (14" Stagg Black Metals or 14" Zildjian A New Beats)

In my home studio I use the following setup. This gives me lots of options for the wide range of original and cover music I play.

3 primary crashes (16", 18", 20")
2 effect crashes (14" trash crash, 15" Jungle crash)
3 splashes (8", 10", 12")
2 chinas (16", 20")

For a gig, I'll take what I need for the music allowing for the space I have and the time I will have to setup.

...two crash, hats and ride.

My ride is a 20" Manhattan which serves as both ride and third crash, while my 17" HHXtreme crash serves double duty as my second crash, and china due to it,s trashiness. My first crash is anHH 16" thin, and a pair of 14" HH dark hats rounds out the rest of my brass.

My second set up consists of 14" el Sabor hats, 18" el Sabor crash, 20" el Sabor ride, and an18" HHxtreme crash. These cymbals are very versatile, and provide a little more volume than my other set.

crashes suck! Ah ha ha, Im only kidding. I useualy use ride's as crashes, because of the music I play, but I do have a 16 inch xs20 rock crash and 18 inch xs20 rock crash from sabian which I use when playing smaller gig's, or lighter music. They're also thick enough for me to not feel like they're going to break.

In a general situation i'd say at least 2 crashes are necesary. Of course it depends on what you play - in some cases 1 would be enough. It really depends on your personal style of playing and of feeling the instrument. For me, 3 is the magic number - "traditional" crashes, that is, namely not efx or something like that.

I only have 1 crash, an 18' and I often feel very limited with it. I think need two for the type of music I play but eventually I would like to get 4, two on each side of the kit. Maybe 2 20's and a 16' to add to the 18 I already have. Or a 16,17 and a 20.

You guy's have some nice collections of cymbals...a lot of variety!

I use all my cymbals as crashes and as rides so I can get the most out of them.

Being that I came up when Tommy Aldridge was real popular, I like having cymbals around...(I'll blame it on him haha!)

I don't need them all, I could just use hats, ride and crash, (or 2 rides on the thin side), which I have done, and that's fun too....but I think my kit looks cooler with more cymbals...looks cooler in a rock band anyway...

I currently use:

15" and 10" hats (sometimes a 8" splash instead of the 10" hats)

2-19's

2-20's...one with a rivet chain

a 21 w/rivet chain

a 21" china w/rivets

24" ride w/3 rivets.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h257/KarlCrafton/rsfrontofkit.jpg

Sounded kinda weird, so I included a pic /\ /\

It's all reachable without effort, and I use everything, but I'm not a "crash a cymbal every 3 seconds" drummer.
Each cymbal has it's own sound and color and it's a versatile set-up for the stuff I do.

I'm lucky that I have a ton of stuff I can pick from too...of course, that happens when you don't sell anything for over 15 years too.... :P

My setup tends to vary.
I use anywhere from absolutely no crashes to five or six!

Currently, Im only using my 16" AA Medium Thin, 13" Quick Beats, and a 21" Sweet Ride.

Previously, when I brought out my full, 6 piece kit (2 racks, 2 floors, snare, bass), I was playing 5 crashes.

Two 16" AA Medium thins.

Two 19" Dark Thin Crash

And an 18" AAXplosion Crash.

Combined with an 18" Wuhan China.

A 21" Sweet ride.

and 13" Quick beats.

Along with 2 remo roto toms (10" and 12")

And a pearl Bala Cowbell.

i only use two crashes(14 cb top hat as fast crash, 16 sabian B8)and a pair of 14" hats that's all my ride hasn't come yet but i am getting z-custom 20 mega bell ride.

some people say that the air space above my kit is empty but then some people use enough cymbals to play a differant one each measure of a song.
