That's a great exercise, thanks for that.

I actually count out the bass pattern as 16th notes with the bass drum on every 3rd 16th note.

1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a
1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a

etc..

so wouldn't that be the same as 1-trip-let 2-trip-let etc?

Yes but I find that counting sixteenth notes to be easier because you're already playing sixteenth notes with your hands. At least for me, if I was to try and think sixteenths with my hands, and think "1-trip-let 2-trip-let" with my bass drum, it would throw me off, and I would imagine it would most beginners. It should definitely be pointed out that they are triplets being played, but I just find the sixteenth overall count to be easier.
