I am mounting floor tom legs to a 14" tom that had a suspention mount.(witch I removed )
the thing I need to know is, placing the brackets on equal spaces interfears with the lugs. do they have to be equaly spaced????

No, I have 16 inch Taye floor tom, and a 14 inch Gretsch floor tom, and there are two legs closer than the third, and I put the two lower than the one to give me my floor tom tilt. All drums have equally spaced lugs, normally an even number 8 or 10, and usually three legs for toms, so its not possible to space them equally.

Thanks guys, thats what I did. the patern on my 16" floor tom is, each leg centered between two tuning lugs and that creates a 2 1/2 inch diference in the center of two of the legs. a (Y) pattern. like you said. My concern wat that the spacing would play with the resonance of the shell. I bit the bullet! and drilled away. tuned the drum next to the 16" and wala. THey sound great together. actully the resonance of the 14" was deminished very slightly but my sound man will love me for it since he complains about the 14" tom resonating longer than the other toms.

Take a look at some old school drums sometime. The Y is on every floor tom.

Just out of curiosity, can't you just create a tilt in the adjustments with the floor tom legs?

Thats what I do. There are three legs, two are closer together than the third. I adjust the two legs lower than the third to tilt it toward me. I feel its more stable than just making the one leg lower than the other two.

i did the same thing to my 14" floor. it was a rack at first, but i put some brackets and legs on them. and the "Y" pattern is pretty much the best way to do it. wait..it IS the best way to do it*

i will be doing this myself as well -- i have a 14" suspended floor tom on my starclassic that I want to convert to the legged variety. Did you get original hardware from your manufacturer? Or did you use generic (i.e. gibraltar).
I was not sure if i should order the tama legs and brackets or there is a better solution?

I would definitely order the Tama hardware for this. It's best to keep it looking factory, especially if down the road you should sell it. I ordered the DW legs for my 16" & 18" toms and it looks factory installed.
