Years into the future on his deathbed, Steve Gadd finally acknowledges credit for all his virtuostic chops and musical skill to his previously obscure Djembe teacher back in the 60's.

I was once in a band with a female singer and I had a hard time concentrating on what I was doing as I had her backside to look at.

You have 4 females to get distracted by!!! How do you do it!?!?!?!?

HAHAHAHAHA!!! :-D thanks Titan...well, for me these girls are really just friends, nothing more. I`m honest when I say that they are beautiful and that they are clever and very nice in general...but we all are friends and we don`t want a deeper relationship in the band...if you know what I mean.
When I`m gigging with them I really just enjoy the music...

oh thanks buddy...!! :-)

Especially in this "other" world I take care that nothing happens between us. I know and I`ve got the experince that especially in this modern rock music scene you have to take care for yourself.
I`m naturally a guy who just loves music and who loves to play music and who plays actually Jazz music, wich isn`t about dirty affairs and even sex (maybe) after a gig. when I have gigs on rock concerts I have to see other drummers and musicians in general who always drink about 10 bottles of beer or some Vodka before gigging, an I`m always sad to see those people who just wanna do a show and aren`t musical then...the same with the girls: They wanna have girls around them to be cool. I`m totally the opposite of this, totally.
So, now you might see how I manage it. Make MUSIC.

Karl ;-)

I NEVER drink before a gig. Its just not worth it too be honest. I have seen people mess up real bad because of either a) too much alcohol b) a mixture of alcohol plus nerves. But I also understand it is a very personal thing...some people can play fine when they have been drinking.

My bandmates maybe have 1 or 2 beers before hand but I stick to water...its hot up on stage!!

yes...of course it`s also personal preference, for instance before a gig in a near town here the two singers also drunk one Vodka-lemon. Nothing bad actually, they were just calmer and more relaxed...but I`m very sad when I see young modern rock musicians who drink always and who go on the stage almost drunken! .......they just destroy their future, as a musician: Keep away from drugs.

Thanks for the comments on the drums. Ah Goldmember, I should have known. I didn't catch that one. Those Luddies are a new kit for me.. the were built in 1991. As for all those CDs I was in the Jukebox biz for a longtime as well as radio so while it looks like a lot of CDs there's a lot of junk in there. My wife does some recording production a few times a year and a lot of people send her CDs, people I've never heard of, but I always listen to them looking for a new discovery! I have tons of albums too... need to do something with those. I'd rather have more drums! I also collect electric trains! I'm a kid a heart.

I switch back and forth, If I'm playing more funk, or jazz, then yes I'll use trad. Grip. Easier for me to Ghost. Straight ahead rockin, I use matched for the power.

And yes, I'm 6'3 275. My bass player is 6'5 355. my other guitarist is 6'2 240 and Marty is 5'9 190

I read you should never meet your heroes. I know the author never met Steve Smith. Cool pic!

Yeah, I've heard some bad stories about drummers meeting their heroes and being disappointed by the reception they get. Steve Smith was very friendly, approachable and very professional. I was able to attend a clinic he gave at a high school (with the members of Buddy's Buddies included), meet and talk with him, then see him tear the roof off the auditorium that night with the Buddy's Buddies performance. He got a standing ovation after the second song! It was definitely a pleasant memory!

Hey Trigger, Yes I was in my yard, up on my pool deck, one day after I had band practice, I was unloading my kit from my truck, and thought, "hey I think I'll set the kit up in the yard for some good outside shots" so I did. There's nothin' like playin' the drums outside! they just sound exactly the way they are suposed too, no ring, no overtone, just perfectly clean. Here's a better shot.http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/610/xpk1bv4.jpg

Actually as I think back...mine was RanCan too. It's the same bell. Cool. I bought it after I saw Frankie Banali using one in the mid 80's, and loved it. I played it for 10 years, then gave it to a friend as a gift.

GREAT job on the classic Rush and Weckl! Your kit has a nice, throaty depth to it, and I like the way you blended the different early Rush bits. The video effects (lead in and album overlay) was a nice touch! That snare has a deep, woody snap to it.

You have a clean accuracy and dynamic control to your playing that is obviously from years of hard work.

I am wondering where you got the Rush/Weckl music sans drums? (I'd like that myself!)

Second pic is high school grad, even further back in 98
Third pic is very recent, at band practice a month or so ago! Yes they still make Bud Dry lol. I bought a four pack of sixteen ounce cans for that night.

This is a fun thread. I don't know how I missed it until now. It's great to see drummers from all over the world, all ages and genders. I haven't seen all the pictures yet, but these are some of my favorites so far:

Groove's Photoshop job on Max. (http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=199673&postcount=412) Hilarious!

Drumsnharp's Kiss costume and band pic (http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=247686&postcount=658). There's something awesome about a drummer wearing an evening gown.

Frank0072's picture. (http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=247949&postcount=663) I just think it's really cool.

Drummer Karl's brush picture. (http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=224015&postcount=528) Great job on that one.

I don't have many recent pictures of myself...and not a one of me playing my drums! I have to work on that. Meanwhile, I did find this shot of me from last year's Burning Man festival. At least I can participate in the hat wars with this one.

What's the latest you guys ever end up practicing? I always stop at 9:59pm (noise ordinances) but I found out my neighbors who complain were out of town and I lost track of time. At 1:30am my friend called me and went "I thought you said you were coming over...." it was pretty funny. I'm never late for anything, but it was well worth it.

we can pretty much practice as late as we like, so long as it's after 7pm and before 6am, we're on the 6th floor of an old mill that has been converted into offices, so pretty lucky there I guess, the only down side being it is a half hour drive away...
