I had the privilige to collaborate with the great Mike E on a tune of mine that he liked. Sadly, he passed away before we could complete it. Since he had only put down a rough sketch for me, I was not sure whether to release this or not. But I dug it up from the archive and completed a mix. I'm sure Mike would cringe hearing some of this as it was a rush-job for him, and not the final would-be product. Still there are some great bits in there, underscoring what a great musician he was.

The tune is called "Dance With Me"

I hope you enjoy it!

Here's to you Mike!

Great stuff, that's one killer shuffle and the ghost notes are perfect. That tune actually reminded me of some Steely Dan sort of Aja stuff at times. Nice one!

Wow man.... great song (Jazz/fusion is my favorite music), great playing, NICE recording!!! what mics do you use? your overhead is VERY low, assuming that's what that is, over your ride.
Once again, man...great tune, everything done to perfection.

Cheers

Thanks man for the kind comments. Can't really take credit, the style and groove is all Jeff P. I can also hear the Steely influence.

Cheers a lot for the nice comments. I'm using 14 mics in all:

Kick: Beta 91 + Yamaha Subkick
Snare: 2 x Beta 98 (top and bottom) + SM57 top
Toms: Beta 98
Overhead: Bruel & Kjaer dp4091 (not visible in video)
Hihat & Ride: Rode NT5 (one is visible above ride)
Room: Neumann TLM103

Kit sounds nice but the head on the snare is sooo old it's almost no tone left....

Cheers

Peter, theres is something very Gadd-like about your playing.

Not that your playing is like Gadd, but what I mean by that is that there is a solidness about it which fits the music perfectly. Also there is that chops-are- just-under-the-surface, and never- quite - fully exposed thing about Gadd, very restrained and sophisticated and classy, which is there in your playing which I love.

I really enjoyed all the different colors of the shuffles that you put together as a tapestery behind Elliot's playing ( any west african influences there? ). They blended together very seamlessly.

If you were to twist my arm and force me to say what I would change about this track, if I was producing it, I would have asked you to perhaps have a little more fun with the transitions between sections.

Having said that, I look forward to everything you do. ( I waited 20 minutes for it to load up ; )There is always a depth and finesse to all of it, and your comitment to the music shows.

And I for one, just really enjoy your playing.

Your drum sound is pretty damn close to perfection. Well done.

Mate, that is probably the best compliment I can get. Even though I'm light years away from Steve Gadd's quality I'm honoured and humbled to be mentioned in the same sentence as him.

Thanks for your really nice comments and support. Sorry it took so long to download. The file is almost 65 Mbyte but where I'm sitting it's done in less than 30 seconds... ;)

I hear what you say about having more fun during the transitions...and playing this live would probably render that type of thing as one gets more familiar with the tune. When I tracked it though I sorta went into session mode and just grooved through it. Since I am a composer as much as anything I usually tend to under-play the drums a touch, thinking more about the overall production, which can be both good and bad depending how you look at it.

I like your observation about under-the-surface chops. I usually check any obvious, gimmicky chops at the door and go for basic, which is right 99% of the time.

Cheers mate

There is definately a Jeff Pocaro influence in there that I can hear. The ghost notes are very good, and as someone below me said, your grooves and fills are near perfect.
