i'm not happy about the mounts I have because they are a pain to put on and then keep in tune. i'm looking to get all new mounts for my toms and new rims too.
i'm trying to get the best possible mounts and rims. i know diecast makes some good rims, I just can't find dealers online anywhere and I can't find any good hanging mounts online anywhere either. can you point me in the right direction.
also since I bought this used some of the lugs are a bit rusted. are there any places that will put new lugs on for me?
thanks sam.

You should get the STM mounts that come on the newer PDP drums. They are just like the DW STMs, no more hassle changing heads. Here's a pic from their website. It's a pic of the rack, but you can see how the mounts go around the lugs, and you don't have to deal with the tension rods. These pop up on ebay all the time.

The mounts make it hard to keep the drums in tune? This is the first I've heard of hanging mounts causing this problem.

I've never heard of it either. They are a pain when it comes to head changes, but other than that I've never heard or personally had problems with it.
I personally wouldn't bother spending the money to upgrade the RIMS because you will notice a difference, but not enough on this level of kit to make a difference. Save your money until you replace this kit.

sorry, i didn't mean keep in tune. but changing the heads are a huge hassle. I guess i just meant it's a hassle taking out the lugs and putting them back on for this type of mount. It's nearly impossible to get the mounts on also.

Well then your only options are either the STM mounts that were mentioned, which I personally like, Pearl I.S.S., or Pearl Optimount though the Optimounts attach at the lug like RIMS, although only two lugs which makes it a bit easier. You can also have your toms fitted with a Yamaha YESS system, but you'd ruin the resale value of the kit because that involves drilling holes.

Unless you place a mount right to the shell, or use the factory PDP mount, you're gonna have to use the lugs to mount your toms. I like Pearl's opti-mounts but they too use four of the drum's lugs. If you make rubber gaskets, and mount a clamp right to the shell, it's not as bad as people say. Ludwig used this type of system for years, and there toms always had good sound/resonance. But in my opinion, I have noticed a slight difference when mounting a clamp right to the shell not using a rims mount. I have done it with success in the past by using thick rubber gaskets and sleeves to insulate the tom from the mount, and this will give you just as good resonance as an opti or rims mount. But it can be a pain to do if you're not used to fabricating your own stuff, and you take a chance of messing something up when you start drilling into your shell.
So you may be better to use the factory PDP mounts.
