View Full Version : Your first set?

What was your first drumset ever?

My first drumset is my current set.. I've had it for two years. I bought it at a store called "X5 Music", and it was a begginer set made by the store. Not sure what wood it's bad out of. It came with Brazilian national hardware.. the cymbal stands were sturdy enough, the hardware on the actually drums not so much. The drumset came with incredibly bad stock heads I could probably make with a plastic trashbag. I still haven't gotten the money to replace them (except for the snare head), but in January I'm going to buy a full Evans replacement for the entire set. If I tune the heads right though, and added a lot of tape, the set sounds decent, even with the stock heads.
As for the cymbals, they were stocks that came with the set. The crash and hats are unmarked and made out of tin, most likely. The ride is from some company called "Tasmann", made out of something called "Performance Alloy", and supposedly won a "quality award". Beats me. I'm replacing these for most likely Sabian B8 Pro's unless I can find something better and affordable here in Brazil.

Anyway, your stories of first sets?

My first kit was a hand-me-down Pearl World Series. Not bad at all for a first kit. I had it for about 7 years, although it was sitting around collecting dust for the last 5.

Along with the kit, I inherited a mix of Paiste 2002 & K Customs. At the time, I had no idea how nice they were. I was young and clueless and ended up selling them so I could buy some Z Customs. Yeah, I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for that.

Gee, you were stupider than me when I clanged on that Tasmann ride for the first time and said "Dude, this sounds pretty rad!!"

I'd been playing for 4 months.

1977 Rogers Silver Metallic. Got them in Nov. 1979 I had been playing almost 5 years.
Nov. 1979, they cost 950.00 were exactly two years old, paid for with my money, and back then minimum wage was like 2.25 an hour, it migh have been 2.00 an hour, I dont remember. I got the drums, hardware, 2oo2 cymbals, and H&B Fibre cases.

Absolutely gorgeous! Still look so special!

My first and current kit is a Sonor 1005 but with the stock Paiste 101's replaced with Sabian XS20's. It still has more potentisl than my playing!

I hate playing on my set mainly because of the cymbals, the set itself is fine if I you set it up right. For practicing purposes anyway.

Here's a pic of it, first day I got it.. I was so excited lol. Observe the way I put the ride over there. Man was I a noob or what.

Haha well it was like that mainly though because of the computer seen to the right of the set.. since then I moved my computer out of the room.. drums first!

Also note the São Paulo soccer team poster and the Lord of the Rings pictures from the Return of the King Extended Edition DVD set. Man, stuff from two years ago is retro to me.. imagine once I can look back at these pics in 20 or 30 years! It'll probably blow my mind.

My first kit was a Thunder, I barely remember anything of it, only that I was really happy with it when I first got it, but eventually grew tired of the sound. It had some nasty rings and unwanted resonance. I had no idea how to tune drums back then... but it wouldn't have been much better if I did. I tuned a thunder drum kit at a restaurant a few weeks ago, the bearing edges were all splintered and it was clearly a drum kit made by someone who did not really know or cared for what he / she was doing. The wrap looked like it was cut out by a 4-year old when I looked under the hoops.

Coronet - one of the names that Pearl used in the mid sixties for their entry level drums. Luaun shells with Blue Marine Pearl wrap.

4 pc - 10T, 14FT, 20 BD.

This was a hand me down set from my older brother. The drums were actually not that bad, and he had retrofitted a Ludwig tom mount and floor tom legs so they were solid and never gave me any trouble over many years of playing.

I lucked out because my snare was a Supraphonic and I had Zildjian cymbals to start out with. I still have the cymbals, and wish I still had that snare (although my brother still has it).

My first kit came from walmart or sams club or wherever my parents got it...it was cheap, but not too terrible now that i've given it decent bearing edges, and the snare is actually decent with a LOT of work...
I was looking at pictures from just a couple years ago of the kit, and the first thing I thought was "how naive was I to realize that kit was not good" and then I looked at the whole picture and said (in not so polite terms) "what was I thinking having it set up like that!!!" Toms were angled every which way, the snare was so far from the kit, the crash/ride was at some ridiculous angle and placement...it was just plain bad. It really shows how far I've come in the last 4 years though (today I just finished renovating my music room and its beautiful in my eyes)

gutenberg: i am dying to get my hands on at least a kent snare!

My first set was and enforcer in wine red. I striped it down, played it with the ugly white wood unprotected for a few months, then my uncle and i stained it a really dark brown and did a really nice laqure finish on it. I shellacked the insides and am going to to the edges sometime soon just for the hell of it. when i first started playing i would practice till the floor tom leg would come loose, when the floor tom fell it was time to call it quits.

i currently play a gretsch catalina maple and a frenekstien kit and have my own custom bop set in the works

I believe my step father has it around somewhere. It's in mint condition and consisted of a 4" x 14" snare, 14" x 24" bass with rail mount and a 9" x 12" tom. I never got a photo of that set the whole time he and I played it. I didn't realize in the late 60's that it would be such a vintage kit later on...LOL.

When I was 12 my parents got me a set for my birthday. It was a well used set of Slingerlands probably late 50's vintage. Big bass drum with a mounted tom an a 14" snare. I played that thing for 10 years then traded it on a new set of Tamas.

I was young and stupid then.....I wish I had the Slingerlands back, if nothing else just for the snare drum.

I mentioned this in another post, but my first kit was by a company called Royce. I bought a 5 piece with hit hats and a cymbal for a solid hundred bucks, used.

The kit was really shoddy hardware and the kick pedal squeaked louder than the kick drum itself.

It had a white wrap, and it was loose and flimsy. The rack toms only had 4 lugs per hoop, and the floor tom had 5!

With a head replacement the drums actually didn't sound too bad. I soon got a set of Paiste 502s and the setup treated me really well.

About a year later I got a Pearl Session Select kit which I used for the past ten years until I got my new kit a couple of months ago. And those Pearls sound AMAZING.

my first kit was a rental to pay for the one i would own, er, my parents would jointly own. it was a cb something or other. terrible. then i got the bottom of the line yamaha kit. which wasn't half bad. it looked like a pearl. the bass drum had a flaw so i got a replacement. then about nine months later i found that the flawed bass drum was at the shop. i told my ma and my teacher that i wanted a double bass kit and they sold it to my ma for fifty bucks and that christmas i ended up with a double bass kit. ha ha. but it took a while to score a pedal for it. oh and roto toms. throw in some evans hydraulics for some reason and that was one horrible sounding set of drums.

My first set was a roland td-3 kit and pd-120 snare that i bought about two months ago, but sold two weeks ago, in favor of acoustics. the electrics were eh, alright, but not even close to the real thing... Here are some low qual pics... i have it set up in a tight corner now but i like everything set up real close.

Manu Katche Hip Gig Jr in purple

Pork Pie 6x14 Curly Maple snare

Paiste 21" Dark Energy mk1 ride

Paiste New Signature Medium 14" hats

Paiste 10" Dark Energy Splash

1967 Avedis Zildjian custom 18" crash

Still working out the kinks and whether or not I like the crash, was bought from a dude who inherited it from his father hehe. thinking about selling and getting something else.

What do you think of how ive got everything arranged? the hats are a little closer to the crash than i normally keep them when i play, i have to slide them away from the wall so i can squeeze into the seat area! lol. i like the piggyback'd splash though for sure,

I think its pretty nice setup for a first kit, but im 24 and picking up drums now after playing bass for 7 years, not about to play on some plastic buckets.

Some super-cheap no-name Japanese 4 piece in Blue Sparkle. Two crash cymbals, also no-name, came with the kit, and sounded like crappy trashcan lids.

An old drummer friend of my father named Dar Barnett gave me a 24" something-or-other ride cymbal, to go with the new kit. It was the best cymbal of the lot. It sounded like a high-quality trashcan lid.

This was back in the day, around 1968, and everyone was taking the front head off their kicks. I did it too, and the front of the kick right away got distorted, top edge drooping down. I had to put a stick in it to hold it up.

After a couple years, though, I was able to save up and get my first Rogers kit.
That one burned up in a fire, but that's another story...

I bought my first kit from a store called RIT drums when it was in Kalamazoo, MI. They received a truckload of individual Pearl drums, and they pieced together a 5 piece Pearl DLX (birch- if memory serves) set. It was huge! 24, 14, 15, 18 with power toms. I loved that kit! It also came with pearl cymbals which sounded absolutely horrible. It lasted about 7 years, and went through about 3 jammin' sam color changes before I got rid of it.

When I was 2 my drum teacher made a drum set out of spare parts of his set. A big 24' pearl white ludwig bass drum, a white ludwig tom tom on a snare stand, a ludwig floor tom, and an old 80's ludwig supra. I only have the snare and the bass drum cause my father traded everything for my next kit but the bass durm is falling apart so it has no use. Then I got a precision percussion fusion/jazz 5 piece which I still own today. I was so stupid I set aside my old supra for this black steel snare that wasnt even that good.

First set was a tama rockstar pro from 1988. These were made in japan, 10 lug bass and I believe were a mix of basswood and something. The first kit i ever owned was a 5 piece Royce kit. Someone once told me that Royce had some affiliation with Pearl but don't quote me on that. I have never once researched that. I bought them with money from shoveling driveways and raking leaves. They were white but were yellow by the time i bought them. Definitely not a well made kit.

At 16 I finally bought a "new" kit. Pearl Export, green. I played those for 10 years and now I have a Tama SL Custom.

I think i sold the Royce kit for 100 bucks once i got the Pearl. I am just hoping that the Royce's are some sort of collector item now worth hundreds. (I know they aren’t but it’s funny to think I have never heard anything else about them and someone could show up here and tell me i should have sold them for two grand)

I think your dad and I shopped at the same store! I had something similar in early 1970's. Mine was very poor quality from the PRC but never mind, you don't need DW to learn how to play a paradiddle!

My first set was a Roland HD-1. It was an all in one electronic kit with about ten different programs. It was awesome to learn on and sounded great but I had to trade it in to get my current set which I consider my first real set. It's a 5 piece Mapex Pro M. Sabian AA Raw Bell ride, Sabian AAX stage hats, 18" AAXplosion crash and 16" Zildjian A projection crash. I'm loving it but already dreaming of a four piece Pearl Masterworks or Reference kit or DW's..... I'm just spoiled I guess (truly blessed for sure).

This is mine... After a little bit of cymbal investing. It's changed slightly though when I took these pictures a month ago.

Is your bass drum really dusty or is it a shadow?

Wow. I'm lame! I already posted my first kit...DUh! Well, here is a really bad video of me in action in about 1989.

This video is funny now, but a few years ago, it was terribly embarrassing! I'd been playing for about 8 months (in the 80's). I can laugh now, but we were so bad!

My first set was a Pearl Export, it was kinda seasoned and had some messed up heads, and was missing some hardware. The hi-hats were bent and looked like crap and they only fited in one way, and my crash cymbal which i still use today, is a sound percussion (I know thats crap) but this cymbal gave out an awesome dark sound. The snare that it came with had a hole right above the snares. It was an awesome set just need to put a couple hundreds into it to fix it up but it was worth it. I didnt deserve a Pearl back then

the most bomb ROYCE sparkle BLUE 3 piece!! just snare rack tom and kick. i scored a CB700 ride and some no name hi-hat and a speed king pedal. i remember getting rid of that cool, old skool pedal when i got my gibralter double kicker!! what i wouldn't do to get that back! i remember thinking, "that leather strap on that old-ass pedal is BEAT!!" what a knuckle head!
i'm currently buying shells to build a sparkle kit like my o.g. nice tribute, better sound and quality!

My first set is the set I have now I just add stuff onto it. In the picture you see as my avatar I added a floor tom, new double bass pedal, five new cymbals, my own Bongos and added my own snare and snare stand. Now that I think about it, the only thing I still use are the rack and one floor tom, and my two cymbals to the left, their stands, the snare stand that holds my bongos and the stand on my china.

my first kit I hastily bought is a Ludwig Accent and although I did not get the bottom line accent it is still an accent! They sound all right, but if I would have taken a little more time to investigate my choices prior to jumping in (and I did jump in) then I would have gotten a Gretsch Catalina Maple or Renown, but I am just a NOOB and still learning and loving my kit anyway (guess I do not know any better...lol), but in the future I will move on and up!

My first set is my only. Mapex Qr 5 piece with chin-dal cymbals (14'' hats , 16'' crash 18'' crash/ride) very crappy cymbals except the crash witch I love. I have since upgraded my hats and ride to pro level cymbals and got a pretty dw 7000 double pedal sometime last year.

Too funny, mine was the same brand too. To this day I hate blue sparkle because it reminds me of cheap sets. The best part of that kit was the Ludwig Speed king Pedal and the Lp cowbell and woodblock combo that the previous owner bought. i was young and that set was the world to me. To this day I thank my parents for buying it.

My first set was a four piece black CB set. Sounded horrible but did have a Tama hi-hat stand with Zildjian New Beats. The ride had no logo on it and was mounted on the bass like those old school kits. Bought it for $100, so it was not too bad for what I needed it for.

My first kit was also a CB in black. The cymbals were Zildjian scimitars and there was lots of duct tape involved. Since then I've had the privilege of owning a Yamaha Stage Custom and as of recently, a beautiful Tama Starclassic Performer 8 piece. Don't miss that CB a bit but it did give me some good years of drumming.

Sounds like you've moved on to some great kits. I've been playing a Rockstar since 05. Looking to upgrade to a Starclassic, hopefully this summer.

im 16 and i started a year ago and still have my crappy first set
i modified it a bit.
the bass drum had a symbol stand on it and one tom mount
i simply folded the stand away and put another tom of a different brand to the ramaing part of a rod sticking out of the mount and added another bass drum of a differnt brand
i turned a four peice delray sparkly orange into a 6 peice sparkly orange and white with a label less hi hat and a first act crash?(sounds like a crapy china) and remo heads
the bass and snare sound ok but i dont like the rest of it. im looking for a job to get a pearl

My first set I got for christmas in 2005. A pearl forum with decent stock hardware and Pearl
cymbals!?. Yeah the cymbals sucked. The drums were ok and I now use them as a practice 4-piece set. This year I got a Gretsch Catalina Maple (with my own money!) and it rocks. I am slowly working on upgrading cymbals though.

70's Slingerland Chrome wrapped used toms and bass with new Slingerland snare -metal(bought in around 79) and new new beat hats and ping ride..later I bought 2 more cymbals a 14" crash, zild. A, and 22" heavy ride used at pawn shop (zild. A) more stands and tama strap driven pedal. The set came with the Remo clear/black dot heads and I later used Remo Black heads with pinstripe on the bass. I also used the coated snare head when I replaced them.
I had this kit for 30 years, I think, and sold it to a recording studio due to illness. I think in 2006? I got edrums around the end of 2007. The ones in my pic...can't seem to get an updated pic to upload!
I just bought my 2nd kit after a brief time using electronics.
My new kit is Gretch-Catalina Club Mod, 4 piece and Saluda Nemesis cymbal set (hats, crash, ride, 2 splashes). I have an old SpeedKing and am waiting for my used double Pearl eliminator pedals (never played double bass!)
Also, selling my duallist as it's just not my cup of tea.

The first kit I owned was a mid 60's Ludwig bought in a pawn shop in '79. Just an old small (20/12/14) kit nobody wanted. Oyster finish. Not a Ringo kit, it was darker, but similar. I found some Camber and old used Zildjians to finish it up. Rail mount tom holder and ride on the kick as well.

I was into Garabaldi at the time and loved the tight crack of the wood snare, but some folks I was playing with hated it, said it sounded like a tom. They wanted a wet deep metal snare sound.

These days, that kit would be pretty prized, but back then it was just a pawn shop cast off.

My First kit was a used Slingerland that I got used at our local 5 Star shop. I got with it a set of 13" ZBT Hats and an 18" Crash/Ride. This was around the time the ZBT's first came out. So like mid 1990's.

I had already been playing for a few years, but only in band at school. So I had a snare, a Remo 6 x 14 PTS that I got when I was 2 years old.

I played on this kit for around 6 years, and added a lot of cymbals and crap, as you can see from the photo.

I think this was taken in 2001, so I already had the kit for over 4 years.

Masonni,
