I met some random guy on a train once who overheard me talking about jazz to my friend and said he had met Oscar Peterson and told us that he was one of the nicest guys ever to walk to the earth. I check out some of his stuff with Herbie - great stuff.
Another sad day for music. RIP Mr Peterson.

Jazz great Oscar Peterson dies at 82
Cause was kidney failure
Oscar Peterson, whose early talent and speedy fingers made him one of the world’s best known jazz pianists, died at age 82.
His death was confirmed by Hazel McCallion, mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, the Toronto suburb where Peterson lived. McCallion told The Associated Press that he died of kidney failure but that she did not know when. The hospital and police refused to comment.

Another one gone...
I studied him and his trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen when I did my Master's thesis on trio drumming, what a group that was, what a talent lost! He played until the end, though. I hope I'll be lucky enough to be able to do that.
