Really cool the way the first pic is done, because of the reflection of the cymbal, it looks almost like it is gold hardware/lugs/hoops/etc.

Wow, I wish my camera took pictures like that! Beautiful kit, and I love the classy white BD head. that piccolo snare looks fun too! Where'd you find the matching 16" tom?

wloeb

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I found the matching tom on ebay and it is of the same vintage and condition as the rest of the kit, so it fits right in. This is my second Yamaha Maple custom. The first I bought in 1991 and it was 24" 13" 14" 16" and 18" in power sizes. It was a monster, but too a little too big as I started to play other styles. So in '96 I traded it in for this one and have been playing it ever since.

I received my lower tom stand and updated my setup with the suspended floor toms lower. Here are some pics.

Thats cool looking. I have to also comment on the Gretsch drum key. It looks like the one one that I had with my snare back in the late 60's where the snare had a built in key holder. Does this snare have the key holder?

NICE!

This gretsch is a late 90's USA Maple and it doesn't have the key holder or muffler. It does sound great with a variety of tuning though.

The setup's looking better with that new stand addition. It's a very lovely yammy, I wouldn't mind laying some sticks over them.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Cherry finish!!!! :-D

Your other kit is nice as well.. very Steve Gadd looking.

I'm just busting your chops, but please, people.... can you put drumheads on with the logos facing the same direction??? I guess that's my OCD for ya!

I tried the logo's the same way but it created a weird sort of resonance and the sound was way too intense. When I rotated the heads to put the remo logos in different positions, it balanced out the sound.

Beautiful kit !!

I'm hoping you can answer a question for me:

I recently bought a 4 inch HOLZ for my bass reso. The reason I may be cutting the head is that I get too much beater bounce and I was told if I cut a hole in the reso side this may help to control it. I see you have what appears to at least a 6 inch hole in your bass head. Do you think it helps control beater bounce and have you tried a reso head without the hole to test the difference?

Well, I haven't compared the two kits with the same heads in the same room. I have the birch kit tuned for rock and the maple kit tuned for jazz right now and each sounds damn good to me. If forced to decide I would lean towards the maple. The Maple custom drums are heavier and I don't like to move them so I got the birch kit to play out.

Hi,

Question, are the maple customs really that much heavier? I gig a lot and I am interested in a maple custom kit but if there that heavy?

wloeb
02-24-2008, 10:05 AM
I have not weighed either set but form carrying each one I get the impression that the original maple customs are heavier than the Birch custom absolutes. I'm not sure of the amount of difference quantitatively.

My Maple customs were getting lonely so I decided to get them a friend for the garage.

Wish my drum stuff worked that way, then my cymbals, drums, sticks and hardwear would all have friends :). Anywhey nice looking kits, very clean pro looking as i'm sure some one said. Got to love Zildian k's.

Loving both...but the look of the Maple Custom, the black gloss with golden mini lugs. Very classy as well as the cymbal selection. How is the Light Ride? Would you find it too loud for small combo playing? Is it heavy?

The Maple Custom reminds me on Roy Haynes...don`t know.

Nice!

Lovely K's, I'm trying to get to the same point of basically all K's and K customs.

The 24 K lights doesn't have to be loud at all unless you crash it. I played with a jazz group last weekend and it was well under control. It's got a lot of wash but it's low pitched so it doesn't cover up other instruments or vocals. Usually I'm play the 24 for the head and horns and switch to the flat top for vocals and bass solos.

I decided to minimize my setup during our remodeling project. To save space, I paired it down to the minimum. The interesting thing is that now I'm closer to the corner and the bass sounds much deeper/more powerful. Boundary reinforcement !

Put on some G2's and an EMAD and an Aquarian Regulator on my birch set. Now I have a little more contrast in sounds compared to my other set.

You've got a ported head, a superkick batter, felt strips, and laundry inside. I guess you like dead kicks?....

Aside from that minor detail, fantastic kits. Very nice...

The birch has nothing in the bass.

I'm going for different sounds and they are in different rooms. The Maple set is in a smaller room and the bass is actually quite boomy do to the room acoustics, so I use a towel inside the drum. I'll try to post a recording of the bass drum soon.

Hi Ozzy,

Thanks for your comments. I made a recording featuring the Bass Drum of the Maple Custom set as pictured with the Superkick II, Ported reso w/hole and one towel inside. Please have a listen. I'm sure it's not to everyones taste but I like the sound. The Birch kit bass drum does sound quite a bit different, but I like the variety.

Regards,
Wayne
