New- you probably paid too much. Used- they haven't changed the basic design since it was introduced. Its a light weight shell, not strong on volume if you need lots of it.

The strainer is crap, but how often do you really use it? Just be careful not to overtighten the wires and pull the lever, it can bend easily if there's madd tension on the assembly.

Should hold its value in 20 years. Snare drums have 'caught up' and surpassed supra's sonic ability in the last 20-25 years. Stay away from tube lugs if you can, they don't hold tension with stock rods and your sweating 'cross X threading' them every time you re-insert a rod.

One thing you can bank on is you're guaranteed a 'classic' sound... with the right heads of course.

THE 6 1/2 (JHB Model) supra has been my personal favorite for years!

No VOLUME?? Maybe not the loudest drum EVER but it's surely ONE of the loudest! But the reason I use it is for that Classic Tone, yeah, that's it's best attribute.

I've got 3 of them, and even pitted and esthetically worthless, they SOUND great!!!

Talk about crapping in the guy's cereal.....sheesh...anyway, I have one and play in various situations from rock to country to studio. There has never been an issue with volume with this drum for me. The strainer isn't as nice as some modern ones, but I wouldn't say it was "crap". It serves the purpose and has never been an issue as far as I'm concerned. Yes, there are many snare drums out there that sound good and certain aspects of the snare drum have been improved (i.e. strainer, hoops, shell construction, etc.), but I wouldn't say that the sonic properties of the supra have been surpassed. I would say that there are many more sounds to choose from nowadays and the supra definitely has its place in the classic sound category. I hope you enjoy your purchase, I really like mine.

Thanks for the info. guys, and about the supras "not having ANY volume", you might need a hearing check or maybe you should try telling John Bonham that. No? Didn't think so...
